The Meron Supremacy

The Supreme Republic of Meros, or the Meron Supremacy, was an ancient civilization that spanned the continents of Lusia and Bellera, surrounding much of the Heartland Sea at its height. A leading superpower during much of the Iron Age, the Meron Supremacy was an unmatched center of culture, science, philosophy and, above all, military might. Through conquest and cultural assimilation, the Supremacy formed one of the largest empires in history, contributing much to modern language, religion, technology, law, politics, warfare, art, literature, engineering, and laying the foundations for the Midwestern World.

Political Structure

After the Cassian Revolution, Meros dissolved its monarchy and replaced them with an oligarchic republican model, currently known as the most complex government structure in the known world. It is divided into three branches: Legislative, Religious, and Executive, which holds power over the previous two. Most offices in the state are elected, though only about 10% of the meron population is allowed to vote.

The Palace of Law

The seat of power for the meron state, the Cassian Palace serves both as a residence for the Chancellor, and as the meeting place for the Meron Senate.

The Chancellor

The Chancellor of the Republic is the head of state in Meros. It is a lifelong, elected position only available to senior members of the senate.

The Senate

The Meron Senate is where laws are written and voted on. To become a senator, one must:
  • Be a male Meron citizen
  • Own a large amount of land
  • Belong to a patrician family
  • Have served in the military
  • Have invested gold in the state
  • The position is elected, and a senator serves for 8 years, after which they may be re-elected. A senator can serve for life if they have been elected twice consecutively, and over 70% of the senate votes to give them lifelong office.

    Economy & Trade

Trade in the supremacy works via the Guild System, with 13 major guilds (and 50 minor ones) handling trade and providing 30% of their income to the government in the form of taxes (60% during wartime). In exchange, the patrician families who own the guilds get to have a strong influence in how the state is run, and the vast majority of Meron politicians are guildmasters themselves.

    History

    Early Kingdom

The nation of Meros was founded in the beginning of the 4th Era by Maurin refugees of the Dust Age collapse. Initially a minor hub for trade in the Sabella Bay, the city of Meros began to expand due to its proximity to the Sabella River, which allowed for inland trade deep into the continent of Lusia. The next several hundred years would see Meros engage in a succession of wars against its neighbors to consolidate its territory and control regional trade. This gave rise to the great Meron Trade Guilds which now oversee commerce throughout the Heartland Sea, and led to the Sabellan War, which was a key event in the development of a meron national identity.

    The Cassian Revolution

In the year following the meron victory in the Sabellan War, the general Cassian Aurelian (backed by the powerful patrician class) marched into Meros and deposed the royal family, replacing them with a provisional military regency and establishing the Republic of Meros.
