LMP: Klarg's Cave

Lost Mines of Phandelver

General Summary

Journeying along the Drakeneck trail, we meet our three adventurers riding one week northwest to Kailia. Hired by Gundren Rockseeker out of Makent, their job is to escort mining supplies to Barthen's Provisions. The crew: Flint, neophyte guild artificer from Du'chan searching the old world for cash and recipes, Dak, twotone dragonborn (Black/Gold) and follower of Bahamut on sabbatical into the Northern Wylds, and Garith the Lucky, a charlatan warrior from Makent whose thirst for riches rivals his thirst for vengeance for those who murdered his sweet.   Five days into their ride northward through the verdant wylds, our crew faced an blatant ambush: two horses pierced with ragged arrows with a large tree crushing them and blocking the road. Dumping their load and camouflaging it in a nearby embankment, they cautiously proceeded forward. Cries of help shrieked up from under the fallen timber. Garith and Flint relented reaching to help the poor wretch by attempting to lift the trunk. To their dismay, another timber descends on them crushing poor Garith's foot. Lo and behold they were surrounded by a dispatch of goblin highwaymen.   Dak managed to charm one of the goblins just enough for him to daze himself. Garith, with Flint's alchemist's fire, screamed "Stop! Leave us alone or I'll burn it all! No one will get anything!" However, this failed to faze the goblins who had already discovered their hidden load. Chucking the fire potion at the goblin, the fierce battle truly burned. Garith took an axe in the face, Dak burned one with burning hands, Garith decapitated one, and Flint sniped the burning goblin from the cart. Finally waking their dazed goblin, he staggered off down the beaten trail to warn his superiors. With a graceful leap, Flint and Garith mounted their horse and pursued the runaway with Dak in hot pursuit.   Goblins are fast but horses are faster. With a firebolt in his back and a knife at his throat, the crew mobbed, hogtied, and intimidated him. The goblin, Miln, confessed that the dwarf and human were taken to their cave up this trail. Dispatching their captive, the crew stealthed toward the cave to rescue their employer. After convincing and slaughtering the watch at the mouth of the cave, they mobbed another watchgoblin checking the commotion. The crew took a breather then enters the dank river cave.   First major find was a path of broken stairs and into foul chambers. Bones filled this chamber with a pack of three chained wolves, mangy and fierce. Garith, attempting to befriend the beasts, fed two days rations of dried jerky to them. Thoroughly distracted, the crew continued up a steep set of broken rocks into a high chamber lit by campfire. Near the campfire sits a large throne with a bugbear seated watching his underlings encircling the smoldering flame. Flint, disguised as Miln convinced one of Klarg's goblins to "help with this big haul" or more specifically, to fall down the rocks and get merced by Garith. Dak fired a firebolt at Ripper, Klarg's ravenous pet wolf, killing the now immolated creature after a short struggle. Garith loosed an arrow into the last goblin as it threw a javelin, breaking free one of the wolves. Flint retreated back into the wolves den as Klarg signals with a "Sick'em, Boys!" to his no longer distracted wolves. Dak dispatched two of the wolves with fiery breath leaving just one left now injured by Garith's arrow. Klarg, pissed, slid down the rocks spitting at his recoiling wolf. Klarg crushed Garith into the wall with his greatclub nearly downing him in a single blow. Dak, as a defensive mechanism, hawked a line of caustic acid onto the enraged bugbear. Flint flung a fire potion at him and Dak dealt the final killing blow, enclosing a firebolt onto Klarg's fuzzy face.   Among the treasures in Klarg's cave, the crew discovered a number of provisions once bound for the Lionshield Coster in Kailia. Across the cave, the remaining goblins in the cave willingly gave over Sildar, Gundren's man servant, and pleaded to the crew to rest and leave. The true prize was friendship between man and mutt as Garith adopted a reluctant and injured wolf under his command. Resting up and licking their injuries, the crew decides their next moves...
