High Seneschal of the Roost

The High Seneschal of the Roost is the most powerful non-royal position in the Dranian realm—second only to the Wyvern Lord  in political authority and ceremonial precedence. Tasked with the stewardship of the royal capital of Dragness and oversight of the day-to-day machinery of government, the High Seneschal serves as both head of government and chief administrator of the realm. From the vaulted halls of the Great Roost, they coordinate the Elector Council]’s logistics, enforce royal decrees, manage the treasury’s distribution, and maintain order in the capital through the Royal Watch and civil offices.
Tradition holds that the title is almost always bestowed upon a scion of the Ancient Noble Dragonborn Houses of Dragness—those families whose lineages trace their ancestry back to the Age of Dragons. To rule the roost, quite literally, is considered a sacred trust inherited from the days when true dragons still nested atop the cliffs above the capital. Though a few notable humans have held the office, these were rare exceptions in times of national crisis or during the rare interregnums when no Wyvern Lord sat the throne.
Beyond their administrative duties, the High Seneschal serves as the Speaker of the Elector Chamber, wielding the authority to moderate debates, call votes, and impose order upon the often tumultuous assembly of Elector Princes. Their voice echoes loudest in moments of deadlock, and their skill in negotiation and alliance-weaving often shapes the course of Dranian law and succession. In addition, they preside over the High Council of Scales, a broader assembly of noble lords, merchant delegates, and military advisors called in times of war, reform, or national emergency.
Balancing the dignity of ancient tradition with the machinery of a living state, the High Seneschal walks a narrow path between kingmaker and servant, arbitrator and enforcer, voice of the court and keeper of the realm. While the Wyvern Lord soars in vision and majesty, it is the High Seneschal who ensures Drania’s wings remain aloft.
