Skirmishers

The primary responsibility of the Skirmishers to maintain a safe and known radius around the city, to identify and deal with external threats to the city before they ever arise. Their responsibility begins outside the walls and extends further than the eye can see. This means they emphasise identifying potential threats to the city, determining the level of risk and the appropriate response needed. Skirmishers always work tactically and avoid going into a fight where possible unless they know they have a definitive advantage. Losses amongst the Skirmishers do occur, but not normally in great number.   Very few of those inside the city understand the sacrifices made by the Skirmishers, as their losses are rarely reported, and their successes even less so. Mostly they encounter roving gangs of goblins, orcs and other monstrosities, but occasionally they stumble across remnants of the Betrayer’s army who are significant threats.   With the fearsome reputation of the wasteland, the Skirmishers often struggle to find recruits attracting some of the more colourful characters who may not necessarily fit into the city. These include adventure seekers, convicts, debtors and patriots.   The majority of the Skirmishers are ordinary soldiers, although some have magical abilities and some are exceptional in other ways. As long as someone is useful and can obey orders, they can find a place in this order.   Skirmishers don’t tend to explore with a goal of obtaining artefacts or making allies, treating most of what’s beyond the walls as a potential threat. They are familiar with many minor fiends, common humanoids in the area such as Goblinoids, Gnolls, Lizardpeople and even on rare occasions the odd giant.   There are roughly 500 men and women in the skirmishers, although at any one time there can be up to 100 of them in the wasteland in patrols of 5. About half of the Skirmishers are designated as Soldiers and Scouts, with the remainder tending to other tasks such as administration, training, recruitment, logistics and maintenance of both the Skirmishers facilities and equipment. All of the skirmishers have been trained in combat, but only those most capable will be sent beyond the wall.   Skirmishers are a military organisation, and so all wear uniforms and designations of rank. Skirmishers are easily identified by their deep blue cloaks and brilliant steel armour with silver trim. While out on patrol they are often less decorative, attempting to blend in more with their environment, reversing their cloaks and wearing more practical armour.
