Far from the warm glow of The Great Light lies the Shattergleam Forest district. This remote landmass is isolated at the farthest reaches of Bastille's borders. It is also the largest. Forever in a state of perpetual twilight, the residents of Shattergleam Forest thrive in the shadows far away from the watchful eyes of the Illuminated Ones. Shattergleam Forest is known as a district of thieves and cut-purses, beggars and shysters. Traders and decent folk avoid the district at all cost. Being associated with the denizens of the forest is disastrous for ones public image. Even Light Watch hesitates to send its police force there despite being duty bound to serve all citizens of Bastille. Luphilia Othoram has been heard at many different social gatherings admitting that she would rather have Shattergleam Forest sink into the The Great Light and be incinerated by its fiery glow.A Haven For Political Outcasts
If there is anything to be said about Bastille, it is that you do not go against tradition. The Radiant Seat does not brook political disidence. They are the first and the last word when it comes to law, religion, family life, ecnomy, and anything else that they deem necessary to keep the peace. Naturally, such tight fisted political practices cause free spirited people to feel oppressed. Speaking against The Radiant Seat is not a crime, but those who do have a habit of disappearing forever. To avoid this, most political revolutionaries and mold breakers flee to the Shattergleam Forest district where the Illuminated Ones are afraid to go. As such, the Shattergleam is host to the most diverse group of free thinkers within the Bastille. There is talk among the more radical outcasts of starting a revolution. The scientifically minded are pursuing research that is banned by The Radiant Seat. Poets are penning operas that are not in accordance with the edicts of the Seat. The powers that be call it anarchy, the citizens of the Shattergleam call it cultural rebirth.Geography
Forbidding Pines
The Shattergleam Forest consists of hilly terrain with deep gullies and wide glens. The dirt is made from mostly red clay mixed with heavy stone and granite. Temperatures are always chilly due to the districts distance from The Great Light. The district spins slowly on its axis as it orbits The Great Light which provides a stable day and night cycle.Istishias Crown
Water within Bastille is in a quick and constant cycle known as Istishia's Dance. Due to its size, Shattergleam receives the most rainfall of any district within the Bastille. During the winter, the rain turns to blinding blizzards that laden trees with snow. The local citizens have thus given the forest a loving nick name, Istishia's Crown, after the water goddess.Fauna & Flora
No Food, Unless You Know Where To Look
The Shattergleam Forest is populated with redwood pine trees that stretch hundreds of feet into the twilight sky. Light is unable to penetrate the thick canopy of the pines which prevents underbrush from forming within the forest. Where the forest thins into a glen, vegetation becomes more diverse. Ferns, wild thorn bushes, and tubers grow in abundance. Some fruit bearing bushes manage to grow in the dim light and feed the sparse bird population.Living Shadows
Just as Shattergleam is cloaked in shadows, so to are its creatures. Bastille is a realm that hangs between worlds. This invites creatures of shadow to come and wreak havoc as they may. The forest may not have any living creatures inhabiting it, but it far from being dead. No sane man would wander into the forest unprepared and never would he enter alone.Natural Resources
The Shattergleam Forest district has an abundance of water, wood, clay and granite. Some say that they have found crystals that harbor some magical resonance.
Shattergleam Forest is a dangerous place. The only people you'll find there are thieves and cut-purses. Or that's what the Illuminated Ones will have you believe.
