Bastille

Where There Is Light, There Is Shadow

Hidden And Forgotten

Bastille is a pocket plane that was created during the Ascension Wars of DR1492. Amidst a ever changing and increasingly hostile climate, the Grand Wizards of the Order of Wizards conspired among themselves to create a secret pocket plane in which they could take sanctuary from the forces of the Lords Alliance.     The plane is large and spherical in shape. At the center of Bastille lies the Great Light, a mysterious glowing orb that shines like the noonday sun. Surrounding the Great Light is the Halo, a floating steel ring that slowly rotates in lazy random patterns as it floats around the brilliant sun-like orb. Further from the center, orbiting like stoic monoliths, are various floating land masses that support the population of Bastille.

An Island Unto Itself

Bastille is cut off from the Material Plane. This prevents resources from being imported or exported. People are born and die here without ever coming into contact with the outside world. There are only a few who even remember that there is an outside world. Any who have questions about the outside world or about the Great Light quickly find themselves ostracized. If the questions continue, punitive actions are sure to follow.

A Community Bound By The Endowment

Citizens of Bastille are all marked by the Endowment. The Mark is an integral part of daily life and has become a symbol of community. It is common to swear by the Mark or to seal a business deal under the Endowment. Some find the Endowment to be an overbearing burden. Simple tasks require the Endowment and endlessly presenting the Mark can become tedious. Opening doors, blessing food, greeting one another, payment for goods, all of these things require the Mark. The Endowment is a blessing, and a burden.

Geography

Bastille resembles a heliocentric model of a solar system. The Great Light is at the center surrounded by the Halo. The other land masses slowly rotate around the Great Light at varying distances. The larger land masses are located further away while the smaller ones orbit much closer. Scattered between the landmasses are "islands", or land masses that are too small to support more than a few people for any length of time.

Fauna & Flora

Due to its hasty construction, Bastille lacks for diverse wildlife. The outer districts do support standard farm animals in a carefully balanced ecosystem. Because of severely limited space and resources, only a certain number of domestic farm animals can be kept for any length of time. Pets are forbidden. The only non regulated animal within the pocket dimension are birds.   The local flora within Bastille is diverse but compartmentalized. Each district supports only one family of plants. The outer districts support orchards, wheat, rice, corn and other staple crops. Closer to the Great Light, the weather becomes more arid supporting smaller and more hardy plants. The balance of the ecosystem within Bastille is closely monitored and maintained.

Natural Resources

Bastille lacks for natural resources. Due to this, recycling is common and waste is highly taboo. The most common renewable resource is water, wood, and simple plant fiber.

It Cannot Last

Bastille was never meant to be permanent, as such, it is unsustainable. The energy that maintains the pocket dimension is waning. The resources within the dimension are pushed ever towards the breaking point as the population increases. Something must change or everything will come crashing down.
