Shadowpine Forest

The Shadowpine forest is the prime source for lumber within Bastille. The wood harvested here was used in the initial construction of Light Watch in the formative years of the The Radiant Seat. The demand for lumber has decreased since then but logging operations have remained a staple of the Shattergleam Forest economy.

Geography

Permanent Rainfall

The Shadowpine forest is located on the dark side of the Shattergleam district and as such is subject to the brunt of rainfall supplied by Istishia's Dance. The torrential rains leave the ground in a state of permanent flooding. The erosive powers of the rains are held at bay by the sheer number of trees within the forest and their deep root systems. The excess waters collect within the Black Gorge, a deep ravine that runs the length of Shattergleam Forest.

Growing Darker

The Shadowpine is known for its dusky purple skies and lack of light. The thick trees block out what little light remains from ever reaching the forest floor. As time marches ever forward and the The Great Light slowly weakens, the Shadowpine becomes ever darker. Recently strange rifts have begun to open up within the forest. These rifts manifest within trees and rocks emitting a black mist that swirls through the air like ink in water. It is rumored that creatures of the night have been seen coming through these rifts and attacking whatever they see. True or not, it is clear that the forest is becoming more and more dangerous.

Fauna & Flora

Flora

The Shadowpine is home to dozens of species of coniferous trees. Due to the lack of light, only the hardiest of plants survive here. Tubers and berry bushes are common but rarely bear fruit. Large ferns locally known as rain cups populate the forest floor and provide an ecosystem for the various small animals that live within the waterlogged forest.

Fauna

The Shadowpine is populated by small amphibious animals such as frogs and various forms of lizards. Due to the heavy rain only certain species of flightless bird thrive among the ground cover. Very rarely pigs can be seen hunting for truffles amidst the ankle deep mud. Due to the shortage of sizable animals to hunt, predators are very rare.

The Shadowpine has a primary resource of lumber and little else.
