Fortunes of Ravenloft
The Fortunes of Ravenloft was a Tarokka reading performed by Madam Eva for the Heroes when they visited her camp by the Tser Pools. The reading pertains to the fate of Strahd von Zarovich, and the Heroes part in his permanent end.
The reading was as follows:
I see in you your destinies; your Fates yet to unfold before you. A Devil stands over these lands, and in your coming may our own Fates be altered… (The Lovers.) In the hands of one I see a Sword of Sunlight, though now it is held only by death. Above the neck of their Lover does it hover, yet never descending to put them to rest… (The Empress.) Around the neck of another is an Amulet, a symbol of Dawn’s Beauty returned to bring hope, though now stands only for vanity. Ever the Empress strangles the life from a frozen city, to be toppled with the headsman’s axe… (The Magician.) Between you all is the words of the Devil Himself, though now it is mired in ruins. Penned in pomp and prevarication, the words of the Devil must be stolen back from the Magician, lest his secrets remain hidden… (Justice.) And the pateshy Devil’s birthright sits upon the head of a shackled soul. Burning with fury for a service unpaid, only Justice will see the Crown into the hands of a new ruler… But besides you walk four shades, four possibilities of allies yet to come: (The Hanged Man.) The Hanged Man, the headless rider, wallowing in the hollow that shares his name, (Strength.) Strength, the sown bride, waiting in the halls of an unhallowed Abbey, ready to realise she was made for more, (The Tower.) The Tower, highest point of the darkest keep, home to the toy discarded, willing to love and be loved, (The Sun.) And the Sun, eclipsed by grief upon a Hill, ready to bring about the Dawn. The Fortunes pertain to four artifacts as well as four allies which our Heroes will be able to use to defeat Strahd. Though many of the people and places discussed remain unclear, the artifacts are largely known:
- The Lovers reading likely refers to the Sunsword, to be weilded in battle by Übel Bachmann,
- The Empress reading likely refers to the Amulet of Dawn, to be worn as a symbol of faith once more by Valentina Dilisnya,
- The Magician reading likely refers to the Tome of Strahd, to be carried as a source of knowledge and power by Soryn d'Nemishcata,
- And the Justice reading likely refers to the Crown of King Barov, to be placed over the brow of Mina Barovonna bringing legitemacy to her claim to the County.
