Skirmish at the Stump

The Lead Up

There had been reports of wolf activity and attacks on people in the region around Ullford. This was unusual as the wolves typically keep to themselves, away from civilisation. Something must have caused them to drift from that relative safety.   Upon investigation by an adventuring party, unnaturally large creatures were found in the forest, in particular a giant elk and a group of giant spiders. There evidence of a giant owl, though one was never found. It was presumed due to this unnatural enlargement of what would normally be prey to a wolf, this was what was causing them to seek other prey. In the spiders' case, they were in fact preying on the wolves instead, as one was found wrapped in their webs. It was rescued and later found to be Shadow, the companion of a renowned wandering huntsman called Lorrak.   Together, with Lorrak they found the source of these magically enhanced creatures. The tracks seemed to lead to a structure called colloquially 'The Stump'. Prior to the Cataclysm War, the Radiant Tower sought to expand their operations with two further towers, one near Ullford and one near River's Fork. The one near River's Fork was completed along with a small gathering of supplementary buildings, though they stand abandoned and the mysterious tower itself has no entrance - a quandary that puzzled the current mages and The Aldenian Archaeological Society alike for centuries. The tower near Ullford was never fully finished. 100ft wide, they only completed two floors before decided to finish with a roof, so it stands rather squat, which gives it its current name.   Inside, they found an eccentric old man called Lavarius Longstaff, who had been testing the enlargement spell, attempting to improve its potency and longevity - ideally creating a permanent verison.

The Skirmish

The fight began when the paranoid mage believed the party to be agents of The Radiant Tower sent to capture him, since he was doing all this in exile. The skirmish was brief and only his poor creations lost their lives, though they did manage to inflict reasonable wounds on the Altaran invididual in the party.   Lavarius was not captured and managed to escape through a combination of invisibility and speed inducing enchantments upon himself.

The Result

Lavarius Longstaff escaped and is currently in hiding, his location unknown. Since all of his enlarged creations were killed and none of the ones released into wild were permanent enchantment, there has been no lasting effect due to his experimentation.   Due to the adventuring party's involvement in fixing the natural order in the area, when they crossed paths with a local wolf pack, they were treated as allies.
