This Is Some Rescue

General Summary

Discovering that the prison Umarov was being held was accessible by canal, the party boarded the Mangy Dog's rowboat and began navigating the canalways of Meicor. They managed to evade any run-ins with the city guard and made their way into Lake Onocrot. Thanks to Anton's skill at sailing they were able to approach the keep completely undetected. Fashioning a grappling hook, Grom became invisible and climbed into the keep. Through espionage he was able to determine that Umarov was being held in the western tower, and relayed this information to the party via sending stone. As he approached the tower Grom noticed that his invisibility suddenly dropped, and was able to deduce that there must be an anti-magic field set up to hold the Crownmage. Entering the prison, he was able to strangle the guard to death without alerting any other guards, but was unsuccessful in picking the lock.   Meanwhile, the rest of the party had sailed around the keep to the tower. After fifteen minutes of radio silence, they decided to take matters into their own hands. Anton fashioned a bomb out of flashdust and blew a hole in the wall, bringing Grom and Seigmar with him into the rowboat. Seigmar told the party that his arcane focus and components had been confiscated and kept in a different part of the keep, and said if they could be recovered he could help them. Instead, the party began to flee, and suggested forcing him into indentured servitude. The keep's garrison fired at the party and made chase, but Anton was able to duck into a small inlet on the banks of the lake and evade capture. In the confusion Seigmar–upon hearing the party's suggestions for what to do with him–quietly cast a teleportation ritual and vanished, but not before learning their names.   Disgruntled with the pointlessness of the mission, the party headed back to the Mangy Dog, and sailed back to the eastern docks to meet back up with Carmilla. Anton decided to commit his ship to their mission to bring the Heart of Déon to the Field of Illusion, and the two ships made ready to sail. As they prepared to cast off the moorings, they heard a clamor coming towards the docks. A small group of people ran towards them pursued by a large contingent of city guard, shouting at the party to hold the boat. At the same time, Grom felt a cold chill as two spectral figures apparated before the Mangy Dog, and a dragon arose from the sea behind the ship.
