Anton von Rheintach

Anton von Rheintach is a pirate from the kingdom of Jairhold and the current overcaptain of the Conclave of Free-Sailing Captains. He has been known to take contracts from the Katalian Company.
In his early years, Anton found work as a trader aboard numerous ships before joining the Jairhic naval forces. He quickly distinguished himself as a capable warrior and leader, and rapidly rose through the ranks. Soon he was given command of his own small sloop, the Mangy Dog. In 1850, his ship was conscripted into an experimental fleet meant to test the effectiveness of newly-developed flashdust weaponry. This fleet was assigned to attack the eastern coasts of Rhiezem-Korr as a response to a border skirmish over islands to the south of Svekanheim. Despite the urgings of numerous captains including Anton, the admiralty ordered the fleet to set sail in the middle of the monsoon season, hoping the weather would mask their approach. As many predicted, the fleet was caught in a horrendous storm and the vast majority of the ships, along with their weaponry, sank beneath the waves.
The Mangy Dog managed to avoid being destroyed but suffered massive damage and washed ashore on a small island in the Jörlan Sea. Anton and his crew remained stranded on this isle for 172 days, during which they lost five men to starvation and disease. After months they were finally able to repair the Mangy Dog to a seaworthy state and escape the isle. Embittered at the ineffectiveness of the Jairhic admiralty and blaming them for the ordeal, Anton and his men elected not to return to service and instead headed out to sea as soldiers-of-fortune.
Eventually this path would lead them into the service of the Rumiyyad Autarchy, where they were hired as mercenaries to take part in the Rumiyyad invasion of Norretain. While very minor players in the conflict, he and his crew still drew attention from ally and foe alike due to the use of their flashdust weaponry and as a result were invited to be present in the resulting peace talks. During a tense feast however, in response to an insult from a minor Noretese bureaucrat Anton killed the man in question with his fire-lance. Chaos erupted and Anton and his crew fled the city, now enemies of both realms.
Fleeing the region for the Achinad Sea, Anton and his crew bounced around the Argendives for a year searching in vain for fruitful labor before being approached by recruiters from the Katalian Company while resupplying in Meicor. While never officially joining the band, Anton took several third-party contracts from the group of mercenaries until he was caught up in the chaos of Aristo la Polla's coup of the city.
