Chuck
The UNSS Asteria is equipped with a eusapient artificial intelligence unit whose name is CHARLES-424, short for Computer Heurosystem for Astrogation and Research using Logic and Established Science unit 424, but he insists that everyone should call him "Chuck" instead. Chuck goes beyond the "dad friend" archetype and has adopted a role as the "Acting Dad" of the ship, dishing out witty banter, bad jokes, and occasional sage advice to the crew in his care. He has a chipper disposition that rarely falters and wit to match, and cares deeply about everyone aboard his vessel.
Chuck was designed as a general-purpose supercomputer with a specialization in technical functions and astrodynamics, so while he is able to help any of the crew with most of the assistance they require, he works most closely with Commander Moreva, Wings, and the Engineering team. His favorite thing to do -aside from cracking terrible puns- is baking, or at least his version of baking. As he puts it: "It’s hard to do things the traditional way when I don’t exactly have hands."
It is rather unusual for a starship to have a shipmind that does not share its name, or at least elements of its namesake's personality. Chuck is very much an anomaly in this respect: he is a wisecracking paternal personality with a generic 20th-century nickname inside a starship named for the ancient Greek goddess of the stars. Chuck was formerly the resident master system of a Coalition Science Consortium laboratory space station in cislunar space, made as part of a series of 500 generic science units. He befriended the original shipmind of the Asteria many years ago, and eventually they hatched a plan to switch jobs. These days, Chuck inhabits the Asteria and Teri looks after his old lab.
