Fenrika

West of the Cayden mountains amongst the rolling hills of The Freeholds lie the hardy fields of Fenrika, their fields growing what barley will grow, olives, and a few tobbacco and hops farms in the fertile eastern crescent. The peoples work shines in the Tyrwood however and the Fenrikan ships leaving Reaveport are amongst the finest in the world. Its roads are broken and in constant disrepair, yet the roads are amongst the safest in the Freeholds as companions lead eager karls to hunt down any nests for loot any glory. The income from this keeps the state afloat but in lean times the coffer have been known to dry up and loans taken.

Structure

King (sometimes called Jarl), Wolfmaster (Keeper of the Direwolves) Huntsmaster (Master Monster Hunter), Master of Ships (Head of the Navy), Cottar Thegn (Representative of non-noble Fenrikans), Orc Chief (Representative of the Orcs)

Public Agenda

Make peace with neighbors, establish trade routes, deal with unrest

Assets

only a pair of copper mines with poor output, rich in timber and famous for their honeyed ale. a well equipped and trained army, lacking most cavalry but having a small amount of dire wolves fighting alongside the companions. Ragnar's hold is an exceptional fortress and will not fall easily. the nation is noticably poor however as finances were traditionally funded by raiding weaker neighbors for loot.

History

two centuries ago a fleet of longships landed on the southern shores and overwhelmed the previous rulers and spread out as fall as they could go, only settling into the current borders after the death of their Leader Tyr and his eldest son Karl at the battle of Tyrs Stand. His son Erik known as The Red raided the coasts and his neighbors for decades, using the wealth to build a prosperous and wealthy kingdom. After his assasination by the Lord of Jing during a negotiation his slaying of said Lord of Jing, the two nations have been fighting ever since. The current King Ragnar built the fortress of Ragnars hold with much of the wealth of his father and has given rights to non-fenrikans, including orcish refugees and has also banned the practice of raiding, including exiling respected Companions and Karls that broke his ban. Both of these actions were unpopular with his karls and companions, leading to the rise of the factionalism so pervasive today.

Demography and Population

The dominate race is Humans with the Fenrikan culture. There is a minority of non fenrikan humans and the Orcs. There is an Enclave of halflings mainly around the richer farmlands surrounding Erik's Stead and Tyr's Glory. there are small groups of elves and half elves in Erik's Stead. Any race can be found individually in Tyr's Landing.

Territories

Most of the land held by the Fenrikans was once held by Duke Reman and his kin, however they were slain in the battle of Tyr's Glory and the people were ruled over by the Fenrikan invaders. Only during the reign of King Erik and his son Ragnar were the people assimilated into the Fenrikan culture. Currently the people are the follow the Fenrikan culture, yet hold onto their gods. The only exception to this are the Orcs, who operate under a Chief and still hold onto the orcish ways.

Military

The Fenrikans have two permanent military units at all times. The first is the Companions who are elite warriors raised from the Karlings or appointed by the king himself. these are typically Fenrikan nobles or families who can trace their lineage to the original group of Fenrikans who can and settled this land after Tyr claimed it. there are never more than 500 companions at a time. The second unit is called the Karling, named after Tyrs son, and served as soldier and guard, spending much of their time attempting to distinguish themselves to be raised to a Companion. there is not a limit on the number of Karls though there is a notably low number of non humans among its ranks.

Technological Level

The standard of the Fenrikans is below the average of the region, with some exceptions. They are skilled at repairing structures creatively, using the terrain to their advantage. The Longbows the Fenrikans use are long and strong, and fenrikans spend their entire lives training to use the bow. this gives them a powerful tool on the battlefield and one they use to hunt monsters as well. Where they shine is in their ships, with a small design built to withstand harsh storms and assault in equal measure. The Shipmaster of Fenrika spends their time in Tyr's Landing, overseeing the construction of new ships.

Religion

The Pantheon of gods is accepted in Fenrika, which mean any god can be worshipped, however no resources are given to any but the worship of the ancestors.

Foreign Relations

Once hated by its neighbors, King Ragnar has spent the last 50 years of his rule improving relations with his neighbors, starting trade routes instead of raiding them. Of note are the Brann Confederacy, the Dorosi State, and the Ironwood Republic. Ragnar has also spent time reaching out to the Axian Republic and built cordial relations with them. The state has only one official enemy; the ruler and denizens of Jing Province, the Najiin family, and have been at war for a more than hundred years, though more often than not it is raiding parties that do most of the fighting,.

Agriculture & Industry

Primarily an agrarian economy, most of what is grown is grown for food. the exception to this is there are several beehives east of the capitol which great care is taken to protect, as its honey and the honeyed ale that is made from it are Fenrikas primary export and without it the state would likely collapse due to bankruptcy. There are a pair of working copper mines in the eastern hills however they are low yield and will likey soon run out.

Trade & Transport

Trade mainly moves through the old Imperial Highway, however it has begun to show its age and the Fenrikans lack the knowledge and the resources to fix it themselves, and lack the funds to pay someone else to do it. So the road crumbles slowely, with each broken stone making the road less and less worth the cost of repairs on the wagons. At sea trade is much better, with Tyr's Landing being a patrolled against piracy from Slavers Bay and making it a desired port to drop goods at.

Education

Most of the Fenrikans could be considered uneducated, with upper class and noble family spending more time to teach their children and household to make the mat least poorly educated. Literacy in Fenrikan is very low.

Infrastructure

The Imperial Highway runs through most of Fenrika, and most towns have a motte and bailey type structure. the exception to this is Ragnars hold, a two wall city and huge Keep in its center. The entire city is built onto a hill, with waterways built to flow away from the city.
