“Who do you live for? Yourself? What cause do you fight for? Your own? Men have lived and died, taking orders from people they have only heard of. Are you any different? Why do you stand here? Truth? Justice? No. You stand here in ignorance, fighting for a cause you don't fully understand yourself. Are you prepared to accept that? Do you understand now? There is no truth, no justice to find. There are only strings, and someone pulling them."
Count Oilncroft, otherwise known as the Puppeteer, was a member of
Highwall nobility in the
Crescent Empire. His father, the previous Count Oilncroft, held the position of royal spymaster for the Crescentian crown. After orchestrating the assassination of his father to access his family's wealth and resources, Oilncroft set about a plan spanning years in order to bring about the collapse of both the
Crescent Empire and the
Oreion Inquisition.
Developing a conspiracy involving airships and constructs from
Cognitos, and various organizations including
The Arcane University and
The Ravagers, Oilncroft almost succeeded in killing both
Emperor Lunin and
Pontius Mengsk during the Empire and Inquisition peace talks of 1001 3A. He was stopped thanks to the efforts of
The Companions, though he managed to never be captured by them.
It was later revealed that Oilncroft was also responsible for the assassination of King Leonar the Wise of the
Kingdom of Shegoth, andwas in league with an Aboleth that had attacked the city of
Imperia previously. After Oilncroft made a brief appearance to
Dagorn Balefrost during the
Battle of the New Dawn, he vanished from
Crescentia. His current whereabouts are unknown.
Due to his machnications and manipulation of several of its members, many attribute the Companions' separation to Oilncroft, making him one of their greatest foes.
