Western Curse Myth in Ardre | World Anvil

Western Curse

More of a Revellian superstition than a proper myth. It was believed by some that the first Rule of Ainros was doomed to fail, that a curse had been leveled on their family by a relatively lesser-known Wulkish warlord named Ogmun. According to tradition, Greeyan the Cold King, first of the Ainros kings, summoned Ogmun Wulk before him on a matter of taxation. The conflict ended with Greeyan crucifying Ogmun upon the Cliffs of Ardail. It is said that Ogmun cursed the Ainros name countless times whilst hanging from the cliffs, and the Monsters below the seas heard his curses.   The New Spellery at Cantef records that Greeyan Ainros died at seven-and-forty years. If anything, this would have been slightly older than normal at the time. His son Maitiu died at forty-one. Maitiu's son Redham died at a mere thirty-four. Redham's son Griin died at only two-and-twenty. Those who believe in the curse point to this sharp decrease in longevity, which culminated in Oran Wulk and his son Otgam Wulk seizing the crown and ending the first Rule of Ainros.   Of course, three or four deaths over time hardly constitute a curse. Maitiu's death might be considered very slightly young, but it was hardly unusual for a man his age to die of a winter chill. Redham's death came from a stray arrow to the neck at the Battle of Great Cross; many have blamed his own son Griin for this, but it is hard to imagine supernatural forces arranging such a convoluted death. Griin himself died young fighting against the Wulks and their taking of the crown; this too, then, is not so much a curse as the expected result of a Western revolt against a young king.   Still, many among the peasantry persist in this belief, blaming the curse for the second Fall of Ainros, despite the Wulks having long been dead, and will further suggest that those who wrong the descendants of Clan Wulk (whoever they might be) will meet similar ends.
