Paladin Profession in Ardre | World Anvil

Paladin

One of the most revered forces in the world, Paladins are holy warriors who eschew their worldly possessions to serve as warriors of the Satari Faith, traveling the earth in search of wrongs to right, and paying obeisance to the Holy Solulan alone.   Most Paladins are of noble birth, typically second or third children who have little to inherit. They join the Paladins in search of honor, taking quests from the Holy Abhin at the Solulan in hopes of giving glory to the All-Mother.   Many higher-ranking paladins will lead armies by agreement between the Holy Abhin and the Serifs of Khabar (or the Khan of Zalja, as the case may be), or serve under such leaders. The ranks of Divine Commander (in Zalja) and Holy General (in Khabar) are reserved for those who prove themselves the greatest of paladins. Paladins may lead armies of adherents, made up either of lower-ranking paladins or zealous warriors who support their cause. Likewise, Divine Commanders or Holy Generals may command paladins of any rank, should said paladins agree to follow them. These followers are called Adherents, and history's greatest have commanded ranks of Adherents as large as any nation's army.

Career

Career Progression

Though "Paladin" is the blanket term applied to anyone below Divine Commander or Holy General, there are three ranks of Paladin: Sojourner, Diviner, and Commander/General. Each rank is further broken into three distinctions: Lesser, True, and High. Further, many (though not all) Paladins first serve as squires to a Paladin of renown in order to acquire notoriety before joining the holy order. This can help them start their career at a higher position. Conversely, exceptionally powerful or renowned leaders who abandon their wealth to join may find themselves starting and an extremely elevated level. Some Divine Commanders and Holy Generals were once lords or even serifs.   Progression:
Squire >>
Lesser Sojourner > True Sojourner > High Sojourner >>
Lesser Diviner > True Diviner > High Diviner >>
Lesser Commander/General > True Commander/General > High Commander/General >>
Divine Commander/Holy General

Payment & Reimbursement

Paladins who take up a holy quest from the Solulan might be granted resources to achieve said quest, anything from a sackful of silver to an estate and an army. Most Paladins, however, spend their time roaming from place to place, living off the generosity of the faithful; and the largesse of their former families, in the case of the nobility. Indeed, more than one Paladin of renown has eschewed their property, only to have it inherited by their child or even their spouse, thus living off their own wealth while enjoying the fame of their position.

Other Benefits

In addition to their enormous renown, Paladins are permitted to amend their name with "Dame" or "Sir." In Khabar, they also recognize the honorific "Val" for those neither male nor female.
