Gwelryth the Spear

Wizard Gwelryth

Wizard under Greeyan Ainros   There are only two known tales about the service of Wizard Gwelryth, and neither are universally seen as true. The first is that she bore a spear with her during the taking of Castle Aerwoth by King Greeyan the Cold , and that as Wizard Brinid Younger was burning at the stake, she stabbed her in the side to be certain she was dead. A less bleak tale suggests that Gwelryth was called "the Spear" because she was tall and slender.   Gwelryth's other tale paints her in a similarly dim light. Anna Chains, who would one day be her successor, was summoned to Castle Aerwoth to train under Gwelryth, but reportedly showed herself to be of great ability upon arrival, insisting that she had already been named a wizard by her mistress, Wizard Helena of the Mad Eye. Despite this, Gwelryth forced Anna Chains to undergo the entirety of an apprentice's training over again. Some historians suggest that King Greeyan would never have allowed such a waste of time, while others say this is exactly how Greeyan  himself would have responded to such presumptuousness in a servant.   Wizard Gwelryth died in 704 RA, supposedly due to eating rotted meat. Wizard Yanda the Sharp suggests that records indicate this to have been a habit of Gwelryth, that she often ate undercooked meat and supposedly displayed a fondness for raw flesh. Even less credible tales call her a ghoul who ate of slain men, and that perhaps she pierced Brinid Younger with the spear to prevent her burning, so she might devour her. These tales are, of course, dismissed by any serious scholar.
