Geralt Ainros

Called the Black Dog

Prince Geralt Ainros

Prince Geralt was the second son of Gwydion the Great. Despite living in the shadow of his beloved brother, Golbran the Ruby Prince, Geralt distinguished himself as a great rider and viciously brutal warrior. He loved hunting and had an affinity for hounds, all of which earned him the nickname "the Black Dog." Unlike his older brother Golbran the Ruby Prince or younger brother Ruarc, Geralt lacked the deep red hair of the Ainros line, though he alone had the bright blue eyes also associated with the clan. His hair was black as night, and though earthen-faced, his complexion was more ghast than his brothers as well. Were his father any other than Gwydion the Great, rumors might have flown more freely.   In 885 RA, Geralt was wed to Ideina of Clan Tallmun, as part of the web of alliances leading up to the Southern Rebellion. The two had never met and were not fond of one-another, and Geralt was reported to have oft expressed contempt for his wife, his father for making the match, and his elder brother Golbran for finding such joy in his marriage (though Golbran's marriage, too, was of course arranged).   King Gwydion did his utmost to keep Geralt out of the war, not wishing to risk two of his sons. Geralt took this poorly, seeing his gallant brother become covered in glory while he wasted and was looked down on as a coward. He was a man grown, attending counsel in his father's shadow like a child, and saw no purpose in learning to rule when Golbran would one day return and take his place on the throne. He frequented brothels, disdaining his wife's bed, and even today lowborn children with vibrant red hair are oft called "Geralt's get," despite that the prince did not have the red hair of the Ainros. He picked fights with men below his station who were afraid to strike back, brutally mocked and demeaned his little brother Ruarc, and treated his nephews and nieces with almost as much contempt as his own infant son.   So when Princess Ideina began to show signs of pregnancy in the Autumn of 887 RA, it was briefly whispered that perhaps the couple had reconciled, and the Black Dog's fury might cool. Such was not to be. Geralt and Ideina had not shared a bed since the moon of their marriage, the prince insisted, and he accused his brother Ruarc of "tilling my fields." He challenged his brother to hollymock, which Ruarc won. Rather than settling the issue, however, Geralt pulled a boar spear off the wall and made to attack his brother. Ruarc defended himself well enough, but was pierced through his left arm before soldiers could restrain the elder prince. The next day, preparations began for Prince Geralt to ride to war. He would be sent to the northwest, through Urudun and Bastis, up into the Kingsrift, as far away as possible from either brother. In the early Summer of 888 RA, Princess Ideina birthed a daughter named Dienna who bore the ruby-red hair of the Ainros.   Prince Geralt's brother Golbran died in 888 RA. Geralt is said to have snorted at the news, nothing more. Geralt himself would die in the Third Battle of the Pass in 890 RA. Shortly after, his father Gwydion the Great would abandon the Rebellion, unwilling to risk his remaining son.
