His Holiness Cynesige Sigeberht Apfelnähe

A paladin and ruler of the largest of the Frontier land kingdoms, Cynesige is a third generation ruler struggling to maintain and grow a booming population in the shadow of the orc and giant ridden Tågbaf mountains.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

He is short and a little squat hardly the epitome of the tall handsome paladin, yet his steely gaze and excellent physique do grant him a quality that many find attractive He is still in god shape working out regularly and never shying from physical labor, a fact that serves to endear him to his subjects. He bears numerous scars and is missing his right middle and ring fingers souvenirs of his adventuring days.

Body Features

He is light skinned, but his skin is permanently tanned from his time spent as an adventurer. He has numerous scars crisscrossing his body from his time as a warrior, including a large one on his left leg resulting from his fight with a dragon.

Facial Features

He keeps himself clean shaven, and his hair cut short. He has a narrow face and a somewhat large nose, but not excessively so.

Physical quirks

He walks with a slight limp a result of an injury to his left leg, and has a commanding and unwavering gaze that brings respect from those he deals with.

Special abilities

He has all the abilities associated with a high level paladin, including auras of good, courage, resolve, justice, faith, & righteousness, abilities to detect evil & smite evil, divine grace & divine health, lay on hands & the sickened, diseased, nauseated, injured, amputated, & paralyzed mercies, ability to channel positive energy, divinely bonded mount, and the ability to cast divine spells.

Apparel & Accessories

He dresses well, as befits his station but not ostentatiously preferring practical clothing to royal robes. He usually wears at least chainmail when he is about his daily duties but has a suit of full plate he reserves for ceremonial occasions. Likewise, he eschews most jewelry except on ceremonial occasions.

Specialized Equipment

While he seldom wears it anymore, he owns a suit of invincible armor and a holy avenger that he usually carries unless the situation precludes carrying a weapon. He also has access to numerous other magical items one could expect an adventurer of his experience to have.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Cynesige was born in Fexlil, in Ethfamen to the ruler of the land Hagano Apfelnähe and his wife Etheldreda. He was raised to be an aristocrat, not an adventurer, however as a youth an otherworldly agent of law and good, tasked him to be a divine champion. He accepted the calling and set forth to bring law and good to the frontier lands. After ten years of travels he returned to take up the throne of Ethfamen upon the sudden death of his father. He has spent the last ten years ruling well, and has implemented many plans for improvements to the infrastructure of the kingdom, ideas he witnessed during his travels.

Education

As a child Cynesige was tutored with expectations that he would become a ruler. He was trained in everything a ruler should need to know, letters and numbers as well as agriculture, economics and skill at arms. As a youth he began to study the teachings of Utu in earnest, as well as focusing on his arms training.

Employment

He spent ten years as an itinerant adventurer traveling the length and breadth of the Frontier Lands. He has spent the last ten years ruling Ethfamen and has done well as king.

Accomplishments & Achievements

He has two major achievements the first was taking art in the group that slew Civiraelgil the dragon that was menacing Ledigklar. And his defeating in one on one combat Golgremon the vrolikai (demon) responsible for the death of his father.

Failures & Embarrassments

His biggest embarrassment was being pressured into blackmailing a medusa, who was attempting to fit into human society, with threats of revealing her nature in order to capture a dangerous assassin. He sincerely regretted his actions and did penance for his deed.

Intellectual Characteristics

He is a slow thinker, but usually comes to a good conclusion. He is well educated and well-travelled, which comes though in his thinking. While not smart in the conventional sense that he doesn’t have a quick and agile mind, he does possess a wide array of knowledge and an earthly wisdom that comes from hard experience.

Morality & Philosophy

As a devout follower of Utu he believes that good must be nurtured to grow, but must also be tempered by law and order. Likewise, that law can be turned to evil purposes unless tempered by good. As such he strives for a balance of law and order and good in his daily life and in ruling his kingdom.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

As a holy champion of Utu, he seeks to see Utu’s doctrines spread. However, he realizes that the other deities of good are also important, so he leaves his people free to worship as they please (with the exception of the evil deities). He desires to turn Ethfamen into a true kingdom, on par with any of the New Kingdoms. To this end he is improving the infrastructure not just in his capital Fexlil, but in many of the smaller towns. Other projects include building a port on Lake Likith, establishing a treaty with the lizard folk of the Likith Swamp, and building an army so he no longer needs to rely on mercenaries from the south for defense.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

When it comes to his position as a holy champion of Utu, he is excellent. However, he is somewhat less skilled at the running of a kingdom. Taking a page from Ælfheah Handfläche of Onzethcalet, he has taken to surrounding himself with the best advisors he can find, and delegating responsibilities to those better able to handle them. With the divine guidance of Utu, he has done quite well so far, and the kingdom is prospering under his rule after a few shaky years when he first came to the throne.

Likes & Dislikes

As a paladin, he likes good and hates evil, but things are never that simple. He likes justice, mercy, and faith, and deplores evil in all it’s forms. He likes humility and strives to set an example in every way as king and encourages his nobles and officials to do likewise. While he believes evil actions need to be punished, he also believes that evil beings deserve a chance at redemption. On a more personal level, he loves fresh apples and pastries built around apples. He likes to go riding in the countryside whenever his duties permit. He dislikes rodents and hates rabbit meat.

Virtues & Personality perks

Cynesige is humble, benevolent, persistent, merciful, compassionate and brave. Unlike many he genuinely possesses those traits to on extent or another, and he constantly seeks to grow in each of those virtues. He is well educated in kingly subjects and possesses the wisdom to realize when someone else can better perform a job than himself. He genuinely has the best interests of his kingdom at heart, and seeks to use his abilities as a paladin in the service of his people.

Vices & Personality flaws

He has two major flaws. One he is reluctant to marry though he knows that he needs to beget an heir to the kingdom. He is very picky about who he will consider for marriage and has yet to meet a woman that he finds suitable. His other major flaw is he tends to lead his troops from the front, and action that horrifies his advisors (as well as no few of his subjects) who worry what will happen to the kingdom if he should perish without an heir.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Cynesige is on good terms with Wilkin Westadt of Cektoh, Ælfheah Handfläche of Onzethcalet, and Wynnstan Elynbrüke of Windbrücke. He is on somewhat strained but still cordial terms with Aldus Schmiede of Tiefhohl. His relationship with Wynnstan Scheuer of Hirschtal is not very good, in part because of his support of Ælfheah Handfläche and Onzethcalet and in part because he just doesn’t trust the barbarian turned ruler. Otherwise he gets along well with the other rulers of the Frontier lands kingdoms.

Religious Views

Cynesige is a devout follower of Utu. While he acknowledges the other deities of good, and will perform sacrifices ate the appropriate times, his patron is Utu, and he strives to not only embody the attributes associated with Utu, but to encourage his worship wherever possible. Still he recognizes the need for the other deities, and doesn’t discourage their worship, except for the evil deities.

Social Aptitude

As are most paladins, he is extremely charismatic, and just has a way with people that make them willing to follow him. However, he doesn’t abuse this knack, instead striving to give his people as much free will as possible. He is a confident speaker, and has no trouble addressing large crowds, and does so frequently. His manners are courtly and refined, and he has a habit of looking people he is talking to directly in the eyes.

Mannerisms

He doesn’t talk with his hands as do many people. When standing his hands are generally folded behind his back. When seated, he either rests them on the arm of the chair or folds them in his lap. He never conducts business while eating, unless it’s truly urgent in which case he will excuse himself from the table.

Hobbies & Pets

His one indulgence is riding, he enjoys going on long rides in the countryside. He often mixes business with pleasure in these outing as the common folk feel free to approach him with problems or concerns, this helps to keep his advisors honest.

Speech

He has a baritone voice, but no talent for singing. Still his voice is relatively deep and pleasant. He speaks with a Frontier lands’ accent, and has a tendency to mildly swear in celestial when really upset.

Wealth & Financial state

He was quite fortunate in his adventuring days and managed to amass quite a substantial amount of wealth, even for a paladin. He has put his wealth to use improving his kingdom in a multitude of ways, and most of his personal wealth is now gone, except for a collection of adventuring equipment. Fortunately, Ethfamen is a prosperous kingdom, and he is able to afford much of his plans without needing to raise taxes to unbearable levels.
