Government
Fexlil is run by a council elected from its population every other year. One member is chosen to be the mayor, subject to the approval of Cynesige Apfelnähe. Under the town council in power are the guilds. While the city is small and there is only a handful of guilds so far, they do wield considerable economic clout.
Defences
As close as Fexlil and Ethfamen are to the Tågbaf mountains defense is of vital importance. The older section of the city has a sturdy wall around it. The wall is twenty feet high and ten feet thick and has a thirty-foot tower every one hundred feet, along with three gates. The city has grown past this wall, and Cynesige is having a new wall constructed, it will be the same dimensions as the old wall but will extend around the whole of the city along with some room for things to grow. The wall is about half done at this point. In addition to the walls and towers, there are a number of catapults, trebuchet and ballistae stationed around the city to aid in repelling attackers. In addition, the city has 100 full-time guards and can muster a militia of roughly 500 members. There is also the nucleus of Cynesige’s army which so far is only 50 strong, but he is working to expand it.
Industry & Trade
Fexlil trades both along the river to Nutuc, and Ebhar and overland to Anfang, Tatidär, and Ajneh. In many ways it is the trade hub of the western Frontier lands. It has a number of industries but its biggest and best is weaving. The quality of its weavers is known around the Frontier lands and is gaining a reputation in New Kingdoms.
Infrastructure
Fexlil is a well-developed city. The inner city has a dedicated sewer and storm drain system. While the city has brown beyond it Cynesige is working to expand it to the newer parts of the city. The majority of roads are paved, and I many cases not just cobbled. Construction has just finished on a new port along the rivers to expedite shipments up and down river.
Assets
Fexlil is a small city so it enjoys a variety of shops and craftsmen. In particular the weavers are gaining a reputation not just in the Frontier lands, but in the New Kingdoms as well. It sits at the confluence of the Ammihlit and Nichte rivers and enjoys a wide variety of fish as well as several mills, and a decent port.
Guilds and Factions
The shoemakers, furriers, tailors, barbers, jewelers, pastry cooks, masons, carpenters, weavers, chandlers, mercers, coopers, bakers and wine sellers all have guilds in Fexlil, that wield a considerable bit of power. A handful of other professions are working to establish guilds. There is also a thieves’ guild in the city, but it currently keeps a very low profile, not wanting to attract the attention of Cynesige. There are a handful of political factions in the city, however most are quite content with the government as it is, so merely maneuver to expand their own power.
History
One of the oldest settlements in the Frontier lands Fexlil was founded by Thunor Apfelnähe some 93 years ago. It has since grown by leaps and bounds from a Hamlet of less than three hundred people to a small city with a population approaching ten thousand. In its time it has weathered harsh winters, floods, and raids by orcs and giants from the nearby Tågbaf Mountains
Architecture
While the initial settlers used wattle and daub to build their homes, most buildings nowadays are built of timber from the Timchekabh forest or stone quarried from the foothills of the Tågbaf mountains. Buildings are usually square or rectangular with two stories, the second floor larger than the first. Roofs are steeply peaked to shed both water and especially the heavy snows of winter. Houses are typically whitewashed, with the wash being replaced every few years. Windows are generally small on the first floor and larger on the upper floors with wooden shutters, often colorfully painted. The wealthy have some or all of their windows fitted with glass.
Geography
Fexlil sits on the plane surrounding the confluence of two rivers the Ammihlit and the Nichte. While little is built on the actual flood plains of the rivers, the surrounding higher land is well built up. The land is rolling plains, descending from the foothills of the Tågbaf mountains to the east. The plains are fertile, and where not cultivated grow thick tall grass as well as the occasional shrub or tree.
Natural Resources
The primary resource of Fexlil is the two rivers that join. They provide power for mills, easy transportation, particularly to the Timchekabh forest and the Tågbaf mountains allowing for most structures to be built of timber or stone, plenty of fish, and of course water. The surrounding plains, fertilized by the meandering of the river of the millennia, are exceptionally fertile.
