Orbs of Chaos

These 3 Orbs appear as silver slightly prismatic balls. By themselves they shed chaotic magic, which at times can effect the holders and even those nearby permanently, and can have temporary effects up to 20 miles in radius from where they are. By themselves they seem as nothing but a silver orb. A detection of magic will reveal only a subtle dwemenor of chaos. Identification has never been successfully used on them, and we have records of mages going mad from having tried to do so.
Having been deployed they each circle on of the three gates of law that were the source of the power of Vell. There guarded from public view in the small temples built on the sites of the gates, and guarded by the Acolytes of Volga.
These orbs were last gathered together by the Sorcerer JAYDN, who was with the forces of chaos as they took down Vell. He was able to deploy one of these orbs at each of the Three Gates which counteracted the flow of lawful magic leaving the area in a neutral state.
Jayden's demonic guide fed him information to gather the orbs from various locations where they were held. Jayden and his companions faced many trials in gathering them. One had to be won from a Beholder that had control of a gate of unbelievable chaos. In its maddened state it was a formidable enemy, and the party was hampered by their own immersion in the chaos spilling out of the jammed gate. Little is known of this gate, but it seems tied to the explorations of Astrolabe. It appears to have been on some land or island in the southern seas.
One was mounted as the orb in an Orc King's scepter. It was part of the items taken when the party lead their legions to take the Orc stronghold of Dresen. This was still while they were fighting for the City of Vell. Still they were able to avoid losing it in the treachery that soon followed their great victory.
The final orb fell into their hands before they were even aware that they were searching for them. The great demon had caused a great enmity between Jayden and the Sorcer of the old ones that had killed his father. This man had long ago found one of the orbs. Sensing its power he kept it, but was never able to discover its secrets. Although barely surviving the battle Jayden located the orb when searching his nemesis laboratory.
But the gathering of the orbs was not the full story they also had to be deployed. The party first entered the plane of War, that took them to the halls of Ares where they fought their way through legions of warriors of all ages, and were finally able to set one of the orbs to flight. This permanently crippled the Army of Vell. It's leaders now lost their focus and the defense of Vell became haphazard.
Then they took on Athena and the plane of law. Here the mental challenges were great and the party was sorely taxed, but Jayden and Phan the Magnificent were able to enable the party to fight through and launch the second orb. With that order broke down within the besieged city.
Finally facing their greatest fear the party descended into Hades to face the gate of Death and its namesake god. Unsure what the blocking of the gate would do the party was in turmoil, but they knew that Vell had to be beaten. Pushing on in the dreamworld that they found. The party spent many months wandering in the land of death treating with some fighting with others. Finally they reached their goal, and in the great final battle they defeated Hades and blocked his gate.
Emerging from the land of death they found the City of Vell engulfed in a wave of chaos, the once orderly Vell cut lose from law and war and seemingly embracing death. The entry of the Armies of Chaos into the city were a blessing by the time they came.
Now the plain of Vell is peacefully inhabited by its original peoples the Vell Orcs. They guard the land and the three gates.

Significance

These orbs each have the power to counter a gate of opposite magic.  It is unclear if they can be removed, or what they would do to other types of gates.

Rarity

No one is sure how many or if any more exist.  The Demons had found these and lead Jayden to them.  It is not clear if they were naturally occurring or created items.
