Astrolabe

A Glamorran navigator that charted much of the Great Sea. His manuscripts are not fully researched, but have lead to the both the rise and fall of Vell.
The Vell found the area of the Three Gates based on the logs of his voyage there.
His ship had been caught in a storm on the expanses of the Southern Sea. Taking refuge in a broad river mouth he worked up stream where he found a settlement of Orcs. They had built three communities around three large standing stones, each showing the glowing gate on two of their sides. Furthest North was the bright yellow of a portal of law and knowledge. Furthest South was the black gate of death. Between them was the sickly green gate of war. These were the Three Gates.
He reported back that these orcs were of the highest order of orcs he had ever encountered. To the North was a village that featured a group of the most learned and capable of druids. To the South was a small village where death was worshiped, where undead and half-dead mixed with the living. Between them was a great warriors camp. These Orcs were the finest warriors of their race, they didn’t act in the normal rash and haphazard manner, but were finely organized, and used advanced tactics. He could see the visible marks of the magic working it’s wonders on these people, and he saw that they walked more upright, and had a more regal bearing than any orc he had ever seen. This revealed to him the power of these gates, and he knew that he must find a way to get his kin to make the move to this fair plain.
He and his men made their way back down to the Sea and then sailed home. Once back in Tritigonia he dedicated himself to gaining support for an expedition back to the Three Gates to conquer it. He failed to gain support for this, and his self financed attempt failed. His ship being lost and he was presumed drowned.
In turn Phan the Magnificent used another of his recovered logs to lead his Cousin Rolen to Fire Peak Island where they found the ion stones needed to neutralize the three gates.
