Adlem's Quay

Adlem's Quay is a mid-sized settlement in South-Eastern Celestia. It is primarily known for shipping and ship-building. It is also a midpoint and common stop on a common trade route between Pyrrhus and Xelsoan.

Demographics

50% Human, 20% Elf, 10% Dwarf, 20% Other

Government

Adlem's Quay is a standard feudal-style town. The seat of power is Feycastle governed, by Priest-Lord Eadwic Vyncis. He, and the church of Artrix rule Adlem's Quay.

Industry & Trade

Adlem's Quay thrives on the shipping that comes through. As a common stop for merchants travelling between other countries, Adlem's Quay benefits from a large quantity of goods coming in and heading to market there. About a fifth of the town works at or near the docks in total, either loading or unloading, or servicing and repairing the ships.

Infrastructure

Adlem's Quay has two sets of docks, the fancy Old Docks, and the more rough New Docks. Additionally, there are extensive shipbuilding facilities to service the docks.

History

Adlem's Quay was founded several hundred years ago by a devotee of Artrix, who claims they were given divine guidance to settle there. They (Adlem Finnrosaer) erected a temple to Artrix and began work on docks. Legend tells that one year to the day from breaking ground on the town of Adlem's Quay, a creature of the fey realms visited and established the castle and its' wall with a wave of their hands, then took up residence in said castle. Without the manpower to contest it, the castle became known as Feycastle, and Adlem continued work on the rest of town. The town eventually grew to be a small, but bountiful port over the course of twenty years. Twenty one years to the day since work began on Adlem's Quay, the fey lord of the castle thanked the people of the town for being so entertaining, opened the gates, and vanished, leaving a well-furnished castle with a bountiful treasury behind. Adlem, now getting on in years, was installed as the new priest-lord of Feycastle, and began a second burst of activity on expanding and improving the town, using the money left behind by the fey benefactor.

Architecture

With the sole exception of Feycastle, Adlem's Quay is primarily wood, wattle and daub, and mortared stone buildings. They are roughly built except in the nicer parts of town (Like the Greens district, or the Tome district). Feycastle appears to be crafted of a single stone - there are no breaks in the walls except for doors, windows, and the like. This is likely a result of it's Fey heritage.

Geography

Adlem's Quay is a port town, with a natural harbor at the south east part of town. North and south are rocky plains, and heading east leads towards the foothills of the Celestian mountain.
