Corpse-Walker's Inner Council - Three-Skull Character in Araea | World Anvil

Corpse-Walker's Inner Council - Three-Skull

I don't know what he's doing and I'm not about to ask.
— Marrow, Corpse-Walkers Exterreri
If there is power in madness, there is little question of Three-Skull's power. He is a member of the Corpse-Walkers' inner Council, an Exterreri, with a mind broken under the weight of too many secrets. There's no longer a man behind the mask and no life beyond the one he spends in darkness. Three-Skull never removes his Exterreri mask and spends most of his time in places unknown. Even the other Exterreri know little of what he does in those hidden places.   No other Exterreri can match Three-Skulls skill and power in the art of Thaumaturgy. He outstrips the rest of the Council combined, crippled only by his own personal demons and haunted by delusion. He is a mad genius, chasing the phantoms of his mind. The ravages of Desolation has made him pale as a dead fish and transformed one of his eyes into a hard stone.

Might and Madness

Three-Skulls is the least influential of the Council, with the least territory under his control and the fewest Bones to command. What he has is poorly managed and many of the Bones are on loan from the friends he still has.

But few in Araea can match Three-Skull's grasp of the arcane. He is capable of feats that inspire dread even in his fellow Corpse-Walkers and make them wonder just where such inspired magic has come from.   Three-Skull dabbles in all kinds of occult experimentation, drifting between them at whim with no focus. The others use it against him, keeping him supplied enough to keep chasing fancies and wild dreams.
When he bores of one experiment, another soon takes its place.

Among the Dead

The Corpse-Walkers council alternatively fear, pity, and scorn the mad thaumaturgist. He is an unpredictable part of the Exterreri, prone to paranoid episodes and erratic outbursts. The Council make their plans and decisions without him now, but take pains to make him believe it was his ideas all along.

Three-Skull was not always lost and though his bonds to others are rapidly crumbling, they're still there. Stitch thinks of him as a brother of learning, a view that Three-Skull greets with much suspicion. Marrow pities him for the friendship they once had and does the most to support him in his madness.   What Three-Skull thinks of them is difficult to determine. He is most lucid in the company of Marrow and at his worst just after such companionship.   Such episodes strain their friendship more and more as Three-Skull dissolves under the curse of Desolation.

The Bones who work under Three-Skull say that something has changed. They whisper of periods of calm, where the mad thaumaturgist speaks with a voice that is not his and watches the world with different eyes.
Most of the Council avoid him, as do most of the Bones that work for him. Only a few have regular dealing with Three-Skull and his part of the criminal empire often fight among themselves until the others are forced to step in. While some might want him gone from the Council and his territory divided among the rest, none wish to challenge his thaumaturgical prowess.

The Corpse-Walkers   Criminals and mystics, the Corpse-Walkers is a criminal syndicate fueled by dread and the powers wielded by their inner council. They leave the bodies of the slain at the doorstep of their relatives, still speaking the will of their slayers. They are feared even by other criminal gangs as dark and wretched; this fear is the weapon they've wielded to carve out an empire of sin.   Read More About The Corpse-Walkers
