Somnus Blade

The Somnus Blade is a magical weapon, associated with The Dreamwarden, the holy protector of the Somnambula village of Sombre, the home realm of the Travesty of Dreams, Drelux. It is a shapeshifting weapon born of the same living dream that inhabits the Dreamwarden. The weapon adapts its form and abilities to suit the class and subconscious essence of its wielder, granting them dream-infused powers to protect Somnambula. Regardless of its shape, the weapon always glimmers with an iridescent sheen, its surface rippling like liquid starlight.   The Somnus Blade transforms into a weapon best suited for the wielder’s D&D class, such as a longsword for a Fighter, a staff for a Wizard, or a bow for a Ranger. Each form of the Somnus Blade carries a unique magical effect tied to the themes of sleep, dreams, and the subconscious, such as the Lucid Strike, a special technique that presents itself as; whenever the weapon lands a critical hit, it releases a pulse of dream energy. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC based on the wielder’s spellcasting ability or proficiency + charisma modifier) or fall into a magical slumber for 1 minute.   The weapon can appear in the following forms:
  • Fighters and Paladins  wield the blade as The Sentinel's Blade; a longsword that hums softly, and the air around it shimmers, creating a calming aura that clears fear or confusion effects, and can utilise the Dreaming Vigil Power, allowing the wielder to prevent surprise and charm amongst their allies when they can the dodge action or use their reaction to shield an ally.
  • Barbarians wield the blade as The Nightmare Cleaver; a greataxe that glows brighter with each foe felled, crackling with dream energy, and grants the user the Fury of Slumber, a power that releases a wave of soporific energy spreads out in a 10-foot radius when the user reduces a creature to 0 hit points. All hostile creatures caught in the area must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or become drowsy (disadvantage on attack rolls and Dexterity saving throws) for 1 minute.
  • Rangers and Rogues wield the blade as Dreampiercer a bow that causes faint images of dreamscapes dance along the arrow’s trajectory, and allows the user to use the Ethereal Shot power, which causes arrows fired from this weapon can phase through walls and barriers (within 30 feet) to strike targets in partial cover. Once per long rest, an arrow can tether a target to its dream, halving its speed and imposing disadvantage on Perception checks.
  • Wizards, Sorcerers and Warlocks wield the blade as The Lullaby Staff; a staff that emits a faint melody of a lullaby echoes whenever you cast a spell, soothing nearby allies, and grants the user the Somnium Surge power, allowing charming, frightening or incapacitating spells to become empowered.
  • Clerics and Druids use the blade as Sleep Reaper; a sickle from which dreamlike petals drift from the scythe as it swings, representing the transient nature of life and dreams, and grants the user the Harvest of Dreams power, in which the user can siphon the health of nearby enemies to a nearby ally. Each hostile creature within 10 feet of the healed ally must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or lose 1d8 hit points, their energy pulled into the ally’s recovery.
  • Monks use the blade as the Fists of the Dreaming Soul; Handwraps that exude a swirling, mist-like aura trailling the user's fists, and faint whispers of dreams echo with every strike, and grants the user the Reverie Strike power; that can stun enemies by forcing them into a dreamstate.
  • Bards use the blade as The Bard's Requiem; a lute who's strings glow with prismatic light, and your melodies are accompanied by faint, dreamlike harmonies, and grants the user the Lullaby Strings power; in which pacifies enemies.
