Dragonborn

Dragonborn are a race of Dragon-like humanoid, formed from the merging of Dragon and mortal after the Dragons were allowed access to Apa Axas by Zemer Epsh. Gleaming in scale, regal in appearance and generally calm in temperament, the Dragonborn are a noble race of dragon-like humanoids who are new to Apa Axas, having arrived in the Seven Kingdoms during The Dragongate Incident. Despite their relative infancy as a race on Apa Axas, the Dragonborn have proven themselves an invaluable addition to the political and social landscape of the Seven Kingdoms. Dragonborn are often found in positions of power, their calm demeanour, unbeatable patience and intimidating presence makes them a force in negotiation and often go into politics. However, these proud heights hide a past of war and horrendous acts.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A Dragonborn’s reptilian features, and lack of muscles dedicated to facial expression, can make it difficult for untrained members of other races to recognise emotion in the Dragonborn. To alleviate this, many Dragonborn have adopted a blunt persona when dealing with other races, and will simply reveal their feelings truthfully if asked. While this straightforward and direct manner of communication is unusual for most people, those who spend extended time periods with Dragonborn can find their unwillingness to lie refreshing. Dragonborn are also notoriously difficult to insult, as their innate superiority complexes prevent them from registering the petty squawks of fools as even worth comprehending, but, once they are insulted, a Dragonborn’s fury ignites fear in even the most seasoned warrior.

Civilization and Culture

History

Most Dragonborn of Apa Axas can track their ancestry to The Rising Pyre, a coalition of Dragons, Kobolds and Dragonkin forced into servitude by the all-encompassing dominance of Kukundath, a multiversal Void Dragon with machinations of creation-wide control. Although a mystery, the Rising Pyre is said to have their origins in a distant realm known as Faerun, but came into prominence after they were stranded in the pocket plane of Mirikas, but were expelled from this strange dimension once it collapsed in on itself after the Mirikas Incident. Undeterred, Kukandath forged an alliance with Zemer Epsh in order to achieve vengeance against The Vida Quda, in exchange for the Dragons to be granted dominion over the mortal world of Apa Axas. Together, they waged war on Apa Axas after the Lustful God allowed them entry to the realm in an event known as the Dragongate Incident. However, the would-be conquerors were defeated after a long campaign of war, and the armies of Kukandath, were scattered across the Seven Kingdoms, now in control of their own thoughts, and soon settled in towns and cities across the Seven Kingdoms. It was here that the Dragons interbred with the mortal races of Apa Axas, creating the first Dragonborn.   Despite their somewhat tempestuous arrival on Apa Axas, the Dragonborn are well-respected by other races of Apa Axas, noted for their charm and calm demeanour under pressure, allowing many Dragonborn to become noted ambassadors and politicians. In fact, this prowess in leadership is so potent that many leaders of civilised settlements are often Dragonborn. However, this prominence in power can often give way to their biggest weakness, one which they share with the True Dragons: Arrogance. This Draconic sense of superiority has led more than one Dragonborn leader to ruin, and the Dragonborn are often painfully aware of this, and many conduct their lives in a humble manner in order to prevent their baser instincts from taking over and ruining their standing. This personality quirk has led to many Dragonborn joining monastic traditions, in an attempt to tame the beast within.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

While they live in harmony with most races, the Dragonborn seem to have an innate hatred of Lizardfolk, and the feeling appears to be mutual. Why this is the case is unknown, but scholars have theorised that it may be some lingering territorial instinct that remains after millions of years of evolution, or some ancestral memory, or the religious doctrine that spreads in some Lizardfolk tribes that paints the Dragonborn as “False” and that they are demons designed to destroy the Lizardfolk. However, what is known is that the Lizardfolk find the flesh of Dragonborn to be a delicacy, and the Dragonborn were nearly hunted to extinction soon after the Dragongate Incident by Lizardfolk hunters, blinded in a feeding frenzy. While the tempers between these two reptilian races have cooled somewhat in recent years, the sight of dead Dragonborn flesh is still enough to cause a Lizardfolk’s thoughts to turn to food.   On the inverse side, Kobolds appear to hold Dragonborn in high esteem, believing them to be the next state of Kobold evolution. While no genetic links have been found between the two races, Kobold myth states that if a Kobold consumes the heart of a dragon in an ancient and unknowable ritual, they can ascend to become a Dragonborn themselves, and in turn, if a Dragonborn completes a secondary consummation ritual, that Dragonborn may ascend into a full and True Dragon. Whether this ritual has actually been achieved is unknown.
