Copper Dragonborn
Copper Dragonborn are a subspecies of Dragonborn, known for their copper scales and usage of acidic breath. Descended from Copper Dragons; witty, mischievous, and lovers of riddles, Copper Dragonborn inherit an irrepressible joy for life, laughter, and pushing boundaries. Their scales gleam in warm tones of burnished copper, rose gold, and sunlit bronze, often dulling or brightening depending on mood. Their eyes twinkle with mischief, even when they’re trying to look serious (which rarely lasts long).
Copper Dragonborn are born with natural acid resistance and an acid breath weapon, although they rarely use it for violence. Instead, they invent ridiculous, non-lethal ways to apply it, such as melting through locks to sneak into kitchens, dissolving doors for dramatic entrances, or “accidentally” ruining an enemy’s fancy boots in a duel. Other races, particuraly the haughty High Elves, often label them as annoying, immature, or unpredictable, but to Copper Dragonborn, life’s too short to be boring.
They often serve as traveling jesters, Bards, or magical pranksters, undermining tyrants and lifting spirits, riddle-judges or game masters in festivals, especially in regions where laughter is rare, uninvited chaos agents, showing up to ruin the day of the too-serious or too-evil or cultural resistors, reminding others that not all joy is foolishness, and not all fools are powerless.
While many rulers fear them, and some guards ban them from cities, people remember the times a Copper Dragonborn made them laugh when they needed it most.
Culture
Culture and cultural heritage
Copper Dragonborn don’t build empires; they build Carnival-Courts, Laughing Clans, and Puzzle-Circles. Their settlements are loose, festive communities centered on amusement, creativity and, above all, fun. Their society is built on mutual affection and social games, and they believe that laughter is not just entertainment; it’s resistance against despair.
Many Copper Dragonborn share inherent values, such as maintaining the sacredness of Joy, mocking the arrogant to inspire humility, pushing boundaries and rules and ensuring a Copper Dragonborn is never boring. Leaders of Copper Dragonborn communities are often chosen not by age or strength, but by wit. These High Jesters or Riddlecrowns preside over disputes with jokes, puns, or even mandatory prank battles.
Shared customary codes and values
Copper Dragonborn employ 'Riddle Laws': some legal matters must be argued through riddles or rhyme. If you can’t answer the High Jester’s puzzle, you owe community service… usually something ridiculous.
Art & Architecture
Copper Dragonborn homes are chaotic, vibrant places where everything from chores to ceremonies involves humor, storytelling, or trickery. Humor is woven into daily life like breath, to such a point that Copper Dragonborn Clerics often mix healing with performance, as Laughter is seen as a form of spiritual cleansing.
Copper Dragonborn use their breath weapon for sculpture, abstract landscaping, and occasionally, dissolving rival prank traps.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
Copper Dragonborn are known for their elaborate festivals, such as Clownclashes.
Historical figures
There are several notable Copper Dragonborn historical figures, such as:
- Rizzit the Roaring Jest. A Trickery Domain Cleric who ended King Astor III's reign by convincing his guards that the king was a Mimic disguised as himself. Rizzit vanished in a puff of glitter mid-trial and now stars in hundreds of tall tales.
- Glynda Snapvine. An Artificer whose acid-fueled “giggle grenades” cause minor hallucinations of ridiculous things (like talking chickens or dancing barrels). Her traps are feared by warbands and party-poopers alike.
- Kael Tricktail. A rogue illusionist who impersonated Tratch for an entire month before being caught, then talked his way out of punishment by convincing the jury they were all characters in a play.
- Baari “Chucklechief” Vornax. The Current High Jester of Curprum, who holds the longest unbroken record for “Prank King,” with 73 successful pranks on visiting dignitaries, including turning a Dwarven ambassador’s beard into living Snakes (they were harmless, but still hissed during diplomacy). While funny, the incident nearly caused a war with the Hill Dwarves.
