Artificer

An Artificer is a master of invention; an engineer that combines the magical capabilities of a wizard with the tough yet precise skills of a blacksmith. They are known for their ability to create magical items. Artificers are relative newcomers to Apa Axas, as the art was only discovered when Lucidity spontaneously appeared, due to the island's native population, the Kep Barna, masters of invention. The practice is also popular amongst Gnomes.

Career

Qualifications

An artificer requires a deft hand with a toolkit, as well as the creativity and mental acuity to develop new and exciting technologies. Artificers can be self-taught, or can attend the The University of Invention, found in The Ringed Kingdom.

Career Progression

In formal education, an Artificer will progress through 5 regular ranks; Novice, Journeyman, Adept, High Adept, and Master, and Grand Master, which can only be bestowed upon one Artificer at a time.

Payment & Reimbursement

An Artificer is highly sought after, and can command a high price for their services. It is rumoured that three of the top five riches humans are Artificers.

Other Benefits

Artificers are often revered for their rare abilities, and are highly sought after. Despite this, they are rarely the target of kidnappers. Artificers are known to be fearsome in combat if provoked, and so are often avoided as targets.

Perception

Purpose

An Artificer is an invaluable asset for any leader who wishes for battle superiority. A well trained or experienced Artificer can provide the firepower of a hundred soldiers, if properly applied.

Social Status

Trained Artificers are treated as celebrities amongst the common folk, due to the rarity of the craft and their reverence amongst nobles. In early Kep Barna society, Artificers were seen as deadly warriors, a tradition carried on in some areas of Lucidity by The Steel Gauntlet.

Demographics

Very few members of the popular are Artificers, as there is only one officially recognised Artificer Guild: @uni

History

The first Artificers on Apa Axas were the Kep Barna, a species of small octopus-like humanoids who developed the concept of Artificery. It was a far more savage practice, focusing more on augmentation as opposed to external technologies. As a fast adapting species, the Kep Barna's technology quickly developed, and became the basis for modern Artificery; Cursemongery. This dark and vicious art provided the framework that would later be picked up by Wizards and adapted into modern Artificery.

Operations

Tools

Artificers employ a wide range of tools, depending on the speciality of the Artificer. Tools may include Alchemist Kits, Tinker Tools, Smithing Kits and Doctor's Kits.

Materials

Artificers employ a wide variety of metals and magical Martin acts to facilitate their inventions. However, Augmented Artificers require a special metal called Driftsteel that connects well with mortal flesh.

Workplace

Artificers often work in specialised laboratories, although Kep Barna would conduct their work in a specialised temple.

Provided Services

Artificers are often tasked with weapons development, magical item production, and military strategy. Early Kep Barna artificers were revered as warriors, holy men and seekers of enlightenment.

Dangers & Hazards

Artificers work with a large amount of hazardous materials, and accidents are common. In fact, artificers often have a lower life expectancy than most other classes because of this.
