Salelkar Elves

Salelkar Elves are one of the two main elven ethnicities, descended from those Elves who escaped the ruin of S'el.   Unlike their great rivals the Temukar Elves, the Salelkar live settled lives, forming long-lasting settlements and kingdoms.   Part of the magic of the Salelkar is their link to their lands, which results in an effect called the Great Seasons. Each Salelkar king is magically linked to their land at their accession in a ritual which is designed to ensure that the land is magically bountiful. As part of this, the very climate of the land is tied to the psychological state of the ruler. When the ritual commences, the land enters a time called Great Spring. During this season, the climate is more moderate than normal, and all creatures and plants in the land are filled with extra vigour. This is a time for conquering and harvesting. After a while, the kingdom will move into the Great Summer, and the initial extrovert vigour will change into a sense of deep, inner power. This is a time of consolidation and creation - great works of art and building will happen during this phase. Eventually however the cares of ruling will take their toll on the king, and the kingdom will enter Great Autumn. This is a time of reflection on past glories - great poems and songs will be written, philosophy will flourish and the wise will lay in their resources for the times ahead. Finally the king will enter senility, and the kingdom will enter Great Winter. The land will be blanketed in snow, and all living things will struggle. Only with the death of the king, and the crowning of a new king, can the next Great Spring come. The existing seasons are laid over these great seasons, so even in Great Winter there will be a summer, when the snow will partially melt and some scanty crops be grown, and a winter, when the whole realm will be dark and even the wolves will eat each other.   Each of The Three Kingdoms has its own approach to the Great Seasons, which is described for each kingdom.   Although originally an elven ethnicity, there are now more Humans that follow Salelkar ways than there are elves, both globally and in The High Kingdom and The Great Kingdom. F'erend'ar is the only Salelkar realm that is still effectively exclusively elven.
