County of Teranthar

Teranthar is one of the largest and richest counties in The High Kingdom, lying at the mouth of the Shammar River and including the thriving port city of Gerrale.     In the main, Teranthar is a broad alluvial plain stretching on both sides of the river, which by this stage is slow, broad and meanders widely across the plain, making it easy to navigate, but not always the most direct route to get anywhere.  Teranthar is mainly made up of wide arable lands, growing a number of important crops such as wheat, rice and various vegetables.  There is little in the way of animal rearing in this area.   The county contains a number of towns and villages, as well as farmsteads, and also large estates owned by some of the wealthiest noble families in the kingdom.  It is generally regarded as peaceful and safe, except along the southern coast, where there is the possibility of raids by the Sea Reavers or other pirates or slavers.  For this reason, towns and villages along the coast tend to be better protected.  That said, the presence of the royal fleet at Gerrale tends to dissuade most raiders.

Structure

Like most counties, Teranthar is ruled by a Count, appointed for a term of twenty-four years by The High King.  The current count is Wayness Gurdon.

Demography and Population

Teranthar contains the estates of a number of noble families, some of whom live here exclusively, some of whom have other residences elsewhere.  The most prominent noble families in Teranthar are:
  • The Gurdon family (current Counts of Teranthar and the richest family in the county, mainly from trade).
  • The E'lamn'el family (arch rivals of the Gurdons, very conservative, and fierce advocates of elven rule).
  • The Tothonial family (leaders of the more inland, agricultural faction).
  • The Mustal family (closely related to the current High King, although Teranthar is not their primary residence).
  • The Falleth family.
  • The Hulleth family.
  • the Waygar family.
