Rimeheart Item in Amanor | World Anvil

Rimeheart

Rimeheart is a sword belonging to the goddess Loviatar. During various mythic conflicts in ages long forgotten by mortals, Loviatar carried the blade into battle mainly for self defense, relying instead on her formidable magics for the purposes of attack.   Rimeheart is an exceptionally deadly weapon. Enchanted with terribly strong magics and housing a wrathful elemental entity, the blade of the sword is capable of passing through whatever material it touches -- be it living, unliving, or inanimate. This effect effortlesly cuts any inanimate objects such as armor and terrain, but causes no physical damage to living things. Instead, any creature whose body the blade passes through becomes instantly frozen inside and out. The effect is strong enough to even freeze the moisture from the air around the victim, causing crystalline formations of ice to form on their skin.

History

In the unknown aeons before the creation of the Universe, a warrior hero of the nascent tribes of Ulthgard wielded a mighty sword in battle. His name was Gudri but his sword had no name. It was a tool -- prized greatly for its deadliness, but a tool nonetheless.   After Ulthgard was discovered by Arath-Sodan, who began slowly lifting the tribal humanoids of that realm towards cosmic dominance, Gudri retained his famous position as a warrior without equal. He was chosen by Arath-Sodan to become one of her champions, and together with his new compatriots Gudri set out to explore the Void and fight the nightmares within. During such sojourns Gudri befriended the reclusive Louhi, who was the greatest sorcerer of their kind.   Gudri met his end while battling an awakened Old God in some unknown realm within the Void. Out of all the champions in that battle the only one to survive was Louhi, who miraculously managed to deal a killing blow the Old God with Gudri's sword. The alien deity was seemingly immune to spells, but Louhi managed to pierce it's body with the sword and channeled the full might of the Arcanomicon through the blade, striking her opponent with destructive magic from within. She chose to carry the sword herself henceforth in honor of her most cherished comrade in arms. Louhi was hailed as a hero when she returned from battle, and the sword she carried became legendary. Unknown to Louhi at this time, the weapon had become greatly infused with the eldritch energies of the Void -- perhaps even due to making prolonged contact with the body of the Old God she had slain.   As Arath-Sodan lead her champions in their conquest of the Void, Louhi fought on many a battlefield against the voidspawn. She continued using the method of channeling arcane energy through the sword, and her spellcraft favored unleashing raw magic on her foes -- flashes, beams, and arcs of white-hot light left only annihilation in Louhi's wake. Her comrades gave her legendary sword the name Lighbringer due it's tendency to channel pure magic and radiate on the battlefield like a beacon. Louhi favored this fighting style through the Aboleth War, the end of which saw the Old Gods banished as the dynasty of the Empyreal Gods began.   In the following millenia Louhi had little use for weapons of war. Over the ages her mood darkened, and her heart ached with hatred. Lightbringer was next put to use during Fimbulwinter, a civil war amongst the Empyreal Gods. The conflict began after a complicated series of events and disagreements when Louhi and her consort Laufi turned on their empyreal companions, effectively declaring war on Ulthgard. A group of empyreal deities invaded Louhi's realm in Hyperborea, and Louhi bested them with the aid of her disciple Nepthys. However, Louhi's consort Laufi was slain by the empyreals. This distressed Louhi greatly, and she used her magical powers to create an arcane simulacrum of Laufi, imprisoning it within Lightbringer. So meticulously crafted was the simulacrum that it even took on the elemental aspect of frost, which had been the late Laufi's divine domain as the God of Frost. The nature of the weapon changed significantly, and Louhi renamed the sword Rimeheart.   Fimbulwinter ended in Louhi's defeat. She was burned in a pyre by Oberon, but through the dark secrets of Undeath, her soul was able to endure. Rimeheart was secreted away into a hidden pocket dimension, to be reclaimed by Louhi after her planned ressurection.   Louhi's ressurection by the traitorous deeds of her son Loki sparked Ragnarok, the next godly war that would shake Amanor to its roots. Louhi returned from death as Loviatar, stronger than ever before and with more Disciples at her side. Rimeheart was reclaimed, and once again the traitor goddess took to the battlefield with her legendary sword in hand.
