House Griffin

Our duty is undending.
— Motto
House Griffin is an old and honored house from the Crownlands of Logres. Arl Lograine Griffin, the current head of the house, claims the verdant farmlands of Lothering and the vast wilderness of the Greenock as his fiefdom.   Their seat of power is Dunstonbury Keep, an ancient and impregnable citadel with double walls of thrice-blessed granite with mithril reinforced crenellations and silvered gryphon statues standing silent guard atop the ageless, windswept battlements. The keep is perched atop a steep hill by the wealthy and sprawling city of Powys, over which House Griffin has ruled since the unification of Caraegwyn.   Contents

The Gryphonblood

A peculiar property of the bloodline of House Griffin is the magical force known as the Gryphonblood. It is a fantastical heritage passed down through the ages that grants its bearers seemingly divine gifts of might and magic.   The power of the blood of Griffin is channeled through the ancient and legendary heirloom of House Griffin: the Gryphonheart Blade, one of the few mythic armaments forged by ancient elven smiths from meteorite eternium in days of yore. It is said that the Gryphonblood leap-frogs through the family tree of the house and that only the fabled Gryphonheart Blade can announce its bearers. The blade is known to flare with potent magic at the touch of a worthy bearer, with whom it then forms a profound bond; no other soul may harness the power of the sword for as long as the rightful bearer is alive. Whoever is deemed fit to wield the sword is granted the title Blood of the Gryphon. It is said that the Gryphonblood began with the fabled founder of House Griffin, Ser Gawain, one of the Grail Companions of caraegweni myth and legend.

Culture

House Griffin is a family with strong chivalrous, religious and militaristic traditions; scions of the family often devote their lives to knightly quests, the worship of Iona or military service to the crown.

History

ca. 2498
The Gryphonheart Blade has lain dormant within the vaults of Dunstonbury Keep ever since the death of the previous Blood of the Grypon, the renowned heroine Riannon Griffin. Arl Lograine has devoted his entire life to performing chivalrous deeds in order to prove himself worthy of the sword, but to no avail. It was only several years ago that the fledgling templar knight Siriana Griffin accidentally touched the sword during a religious ritual, suddenly awakening the blade from its years-long slumber in a flash of magical energies. Serah Siriana soared to nigh legendary fame in a matter of days and was named the new Blood of the Gryphon – much to Arl Lograine’s chagrin – as well as being anointed to the office of High Templar.
