Common watersnake

Watersnakes are somethign everyone knows, from the untamed jungles of The Emerald Wilds to the forests of Altaros. These snakes, as the name says, is very common and lives in water. There are several different subspecies which have adapted to their chosen enviroments, there's apparently even one in The Underdark too.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The most distinctive feature of this snake is that it has rough scales, instead of smooth. With such scales it can much easier move under the water and on slippery surfaces,  like seaweed covered rocks.

Behaviour

Usually these snakes are rather harmless to humanoids; their venom is very mild and comparable to a mosquito sting. But they are top predators when it comes to small mammals, amhibians et cetera. They eat basically anything they can and some weird dietary habits of certain populations have forced them to mutate in unexpected ways.

Additional Information

Domestication

The local subspecies of common watersnake have been domesticated in a handful of places, most commonly by The Fey'ri tribes of The Old Sea and the pioneer drows in The Underdark. The snakes are both bred for food and also milked for their poison. Some traveling wood elf tribes also keep them both as pets to keep pest away from their grain and other food.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

In the area of The Old Sea they are often grilled on an open fire and favored as a tasty snack when traveling. The mild venom is also milked, as mentioned above, and used as an ingredients in several different concoctions, but most often to treat heartburn, indigestion, and other stomach problems.
