Thaolin Meriday Character in Alpha Centauri | World Anvil

Thaolin Meriday

A deeply inspirational scientist that has influenced many with her works

When Asteroid Mors suddenly had collision course towards Earth, Thaolin was on the team to figure out how it happened, and how to prevent the giant rock from hitting Earth. She, and a few from the team, created and sent SATELITE HC-2 out into deap space, and collected data from the point of change.
Though none of the scientists expected what they found.

Since Thaolin was a small child, her dad Weilm Meriday had been working on a mathematical problem about points of connections - as he called them. He had theorized that secret paths that connected distant stars and solar systems exist all around the universe, though no one had ever seen one.   He tried explaining Thaolin about black holes, and how no one thought they were real, and now we know they exist - we even have pictures! Of course, it was only theorized in Weilms time.   Thaolin got very interested in astrophysics as a child - no wonder her dad was her biggest inspiration.

Weilm didn't get to solve the mathematical problem of points of connections before his death, and his theories were slowly forgotten by the world - but never forgotten by Thaolin.   Over the past years, before asteroid mors happened, she had pondered about her dad's old theories of "paths" and the idea that two points could be connected in time and space across millions of light-years.   Calculations were made, but it never really got further than what her dad had already figured out before he passed away.
But when the data from SATELITE HC-2 sent its data back, Thaolin got extremely excited, because if she wasn’t hallucinating, the data might prove her dad's theories. And they did. What they found at the point of change was a path in time and space. Her newfound data made it possible for her to locate Path-001 and prove that her dad's old theories were more than just theories.   Later when she published her findings, people were sceptical. The whole idea about "wormholes" - an idea commonly used in science fiction - is real, made a lot of people question Thaolins findings. She just brushed it off and continued to study the path.   Her and the rest of the team, decided to see what happen if they sent SATELITE HC-2 into the path. The satellite went through, but surprisingly, data was still coming through to Earth. Pictures of a distant star and solar system were sent back to the small team. They had made a breakthrough so big, that it was hard to comprehend. The team then made it possible for humans to travel to another solar system - specifically Alpha Centauri A.

Personality

Thaolin is a strong-minded and confident woman - she has that from her dad. Stubbornness runs in her blood. If something bothers her, she will look for a solution right away.

Personal history

Her father Weilm has always had a big say in her life. Right from when she was little, she has looked up to him.   Her mother has always encouraged her to follow her heart, no matter where it might want her to go. Because if you don't have your heart with you, you might want to rethink your situation. She used to ask Thaolin about how she was, and if she was happy being where she was.   As her dad got older, he loved seeing his daughter grow up to be a beautiful clever woman. Like she was inspired by him, so was he inspired by her. When Weilm passed it cut very deep in Thaolins heart. She couldn't do much afterwards. Until she found her dad's old research notes - then she was suddenly on a mission. A mission to complete her dad's work. For him.

After years of studies, speculations and theorising, Thaolin finally got to finish the work her father had started before she was even born. She has always been proud of her father, and didn't see this book as only her own accomplishment, but more like their accomplishment together.   To honour her father and all of his work, she put his name at the top. This was her way of telling the world who started the project and making sure he got the recognition he deserved.
