Annice Matthewman
Annice grew up in Whitby, on the Yorkshire coast. Her mother spent a few years as a schoolteacher and her father was trained as an apothecary but fell in love with jet carving after moving to Whitby as a young man. Annice was trained in the art of carving jet by her grandfather.
When Facets of the Bench begins, her grandfather and grandmother have recently died, and she's trying to figure out her future. Custom (at least in the non-magical community) forbids women from being jet carvers.
