Ones Below

The Ones Below are a group of related creatures from dimensional space that exists outside the River of Souls. The Ones Below consist of several different species, much like the residents of the worlds within the River. These four species are insular and frequently hostile to each other, although temporary alliances between groups sometimes arise. There are four dominant species of the Ones Below, each with its own agenda:

The Mind Flayers are the most psionically potent of the Ones Below. They are also the most likely to communicate with the native residents of Ailar. However, this communication is almost exclusive used to manipulate other creatures. Their agenda is world dominance and control over the people of Ailar.
The Deep Ones are aquatic creatures, although they have created several hybrid species that are able to operate on land. The Deep Ones are the most scientifically and magically advanced of the Ones Below. Their agenda is to extract information and knowledge from the people of Ailar.
The Shapers of Flesh are masters of biomancy. They have altered themselves so much that their original forms have been lost to time. They frequently capture creatures native to Ailar and modify them for specific purposes, from espionage to warfare. Their agenda is cultivate the strongest servitors from the creatures of Ailar.
The Eye Tyrants are, individually, the most powerful of the Ones Below. They are also the most alien. They are as likely to fight with the other Ones Below, or even each other, as they are to attack the natives of Ailar. Their agenda remains a mystery.

These four species are insular and frequently hostile to each other, although temporary alliances between groups sometimes arise. Within each group, multiple ideological factions vie for supremacy. However, all Ones Below share a single, overriding goal: to conquer and consume as many worlds from the River as possible.
