Coronaea

The central Triton kingdom of Coronaea is the largest Sea Kingdom. Blackrock, controlling the seas around the Reef and the Cataract, has greater arcane power and wealth; Jagged Teeth has the strongest military; but uncontested control of the northern ocean from Cathlaea to the Aurora means that. Coronaea controls more territory than any other state on Aiaos.   The city of Coronaea is grown from, and built on, in and under the reef. Its distinctive architecture combines guided coral growth with a unique, silver-grey worked stone. This stone, used nowhere else in the World, is reclaimed from the sunken architecture of ancient Ladon. Where the overcity rises from the black stone of the volcanic ridge on which the reef grows, this stone shimmers blue, gold and rose in a mirror of the coral.   While rarely, if ever, seen by landfolk, it is said that many Ladonian buildings still lie beneath the waves of the central sea, including a vast, broken dome which once capped the soaring pinnacle of the Tore Ladon, now lost in the skies.   At the waters edge, docks and warehouses of magnificently carved driftwood line the ragged, hull-tearing shores. On the west side of the ridge, the ocean docks receive shipping from Caino and Suto, while on the east side the little docks see smaller vessels go to and fro from Azeranzerai and other parts of Yethera.   The spires of the Coronal Temple rise high above all else, even the majestic sprawl of the Grand Palace, and also sink into the basalt, emerging to fill a natural break in the ridge at the centre of the undercity. The palace and the temple are linked by the broad, two-mile-long thoroughfare of the Royal Way. The rich manors of the noble quarter lie behind the palace, while the rambling streets behind the temple, known as the Shambles, are where the common folk of Coronaea are most likely to live. East and west of the Way, the Bazaar sprawls down to the docks, home of shops, stalls, guildhalls and merchants' dwellings.   The ridge drops off sharply on both sides, allowing large ships to approach either dock. The undercity sprawls vertically across the plunging cliffs, the lights of coral-grown houses, ranging from cottages to mansions, visible through the clear waters surrounding the city. The undercity is home to the Merfolk and Sahuagin of the city, as well as the military district - comprised of the city garrison barracks and the Trinium, the headquarters of the kingdom's military command - while the overcity is favoured by sea elves and Tritons.   As well as the Coronal Ocean, Coronaea claims control of the Straits of Muna via its military forces, wide-ranging patrols and a number of satellite citadels.   Coronaea is a ceremonial kingdom, with an hereditary monarch as head of state, and a tripartite government known as the Threefold Court. This Court consists of the Ministry, the Parliament and the Collegia. The Ministry is the executive division, including the seven Ministers of State appointed by the Monarch - the Ministers of the Shallows, the Surge and the Deeps, the secretaries of Diplomacy, War and Trade, and the Chancellor - and thirty seven ministers-regular elected from the nine civil polities. The Parliament is the legislative house, a body of seven-hundred-and-nine representatives from the administrative districts. Most representatives belong to one of several partisan factions. The leader of the faction with the most representatives serves as First Representative, the de facto head of Parliament, while the longest serving representative acts as First Counsel, responsible for parliamentary administration. The Collegia is the meritocratic chamber representing matters spiritual, academic and judicial. It is made up of three Lords Spiritual, three Lord Jurists and the Lord Scholars, overseeing the larger subdivisions of the Temple Precinct, the Court of Justice and the Royal Academies.
