Shore folk Ethnicity in Age of Gray | World Anvil

Shore folk

As it was to be expected, the commotion at the harbor brought almost half of the city to the streets. One would think that by now we probably should have already known that if the Witches starts to mess around, it's better to hide inside the house. Some even tried to sneak in closer, without being seen by the Shore Guard. Well, if there's one thing that can be said about us shore folk, we never back off. Even if by now we should learn otherwise.

Living by the sea isn't safe. There are many sea creatures that once in a while leave their normal environment to snack on something land-dwelling. And what's worse, the waters they inhabit are completely Blue, threatening anyone who gets too close to them with Oversaturation (condition) or death. Those who decided to settle there are either mad or very tough. And today, their descendants became even tougher, getting more resistant to the influence of Blue Color.

No Blue

Over the generations, bodies of those living by the shore found simple ways to counteract the ever-present influence of Blue. Because of that, they produce less and get rid of more Blue Color than it is normal for the people living inland. The amount of Blue inside their bodies is so low, it rarely manifests in their pigmentation. Their hair rarely gets gray with age and they are often easily recognizable thanks to the intense yellow, green, and red hair and skin pigmentation (humans tend to have darker skin tones). Still, the more toned-down colors such as browns and hues close to black tend to dominate the color palette.

Culture

Art & Architecture

The houses of shore folk are simple, with right angles prevailing over any other shapes. To slow down the negative influence of the sea's Blue and Black Colors on them, they are mostly built out of materials that are naturally white or gray.   While traditional art such as paintings and statues are rarely seen there, craftsmen living near the sea tend to adorn both tools and furniture with simple and stylish engravings similar in style to art déco.   The only buildings that differ from the usual architecture built by the shore folk are the ones inhabited by the Witches. Those structures always stick out a mile with their splendor and extravagance.

Funerary and Memorial customs

To prevent the oversaturation of those who passed away and to avoid luring sea monsters with corpses, it's seen as normal to just burn the bodies. The ashes, then, are either kept in an urn inside the house or are buried in the cemetery close to the city. Just like it is with their houses, the tombstones of shore folk are very simple and small, usually being only a stone with the name of the one who passed away on it.

Fashion

For the most part, people living by the sea prefer to wear clothes that are practical, and their fashion is often considered a little dull by everyone else. They often wear baggy clothes and hats that will protect them from the Blue being brought from the sea in the form of the sea breeze or Blue Clouds. In case of those conditions happening more frequently, they need to regularly change their clothes, so focusing on a stylish look goes out the window.

Gender ideals

It is seen as completely normal for men and women to work the same type of work. As long as one is wanting to work as Kelp Gatherer, factory worker, Shore Guard, or craftsman, and accepts all the possible dangers of the profession, they will be welcomed in their new position without a word.
