Halcyon

The prosperous Human kingdom of Halcyon in the Northern Forests of Ellonia.

Structure

The King of Halcyon rules over the entirety of the kingdom and owns the capital city, Flostrum. Directly under the King are the Halcyon Nobles - descendants of the royal family who officially own and profit from their family-named settlements. Each Halcyon Noble has a Reeve who lives in the village and handles the day-to-day paperwork and judicial issues.

History

Halcyon began as any other settlement did: under a different name and governmental structure. At the beginning of the Era of Man, a tribe of Humans on Ellonia found fertile land to settle and eventually built a small village which they would call Haven.   A few incursions from the wildlife and some other Human raiders slowed Haven's growth. Still, the people survived, they adapted, and they eventually were able to expand once the population allowed. In time, the people elected their most vital and decisive defender to lead them into prosperity. As the leader became older and weaker, they needed a replacement, so the people elected a new one to take their place - one with similar strong qualities.   Around 100 years after Haven's founding, they struck gold. To the west of the town of Haven was the mountain range known as The Great Spine. A prospecting party sought a mining opportunity and found precious metals and gems. Soon after, Haven built its first coin mint, and with the metals from the mine, they quickly became one of the wealthiest settlements in Ellonia. That wealth helped Haven begin trading with its neighbours for all of the resources it lacked, allowing for the rapid expansion from a town to a sprawling city. This massive spending earned Haven the nickname Halcyon by its neighbours. The leader of Haven at this time declared his leadership to be the most successful in Haven's history. He believed that only his bloodline could continue bringing Halcyon its prosperity, and many citizens agreed. So he decreed that Halcyon be reformed as a Kingdom, with him as its King. Some of the wisest scholars in the land would groom every King's firstborn son so that they may continue to rule as he did.   Halcyon became a superpower on Ellonia. Known for its massive wealth and many trade partners, influential groups and individuals flocked to the city, hoping to see some of that wealth enter their coffers. The city built tall, built lavishly, and eventually built great walls to defend its citizens.   When the Demonic War happened, Halcyon's neighbours and trade partners to the east did not survive the onslaught. Halcyon's walls became one of the last lines of defence for Ellonia's heroes. When the War ended, the survivors made several attempts to rebuild what was lost, in vain. Many Demons remained and made it impossible to colonize, and the untouched land regrew over time thanks to the Forest of Dreams.   Centuries passed as more people left their countries to try and claim what was lost so long ago. One of Halcyon's Kings, Flostrum, believed that he was the reincarnation of the first of his line of Kings, meaning he was born with the purest blood of Kings. The King and Queen had eight children and kept their existence a secret from everyone outside the Golden Tower.   When the King revealed his now adult children and his plans for expansion, Halcyon was made the capital city and renamed Flostrum, after him. Seven of the King's children were sent out with settlers and enough to survive so that Halcyon might expand its reach and claim what lay buried from centuries ago. They settled their new homes and, as their father did, named them after themselves: Ariadne, Rizno, Mariam, Samson, Norlun, Krong, and Belsnik. The remaining child proved themselves to be the most capable and stayed in Halcyon to be crowned King when the time came.
