Mariam
The village of Mariam, located in near central Halcyon. It serves several purposes in Halcyon due to its location. Firstly, its acts as a distribution center for goods throughout the kingdom. While the neighbouring port town, Krong, handles much of the kingdom's imports and exports, Mariam handles the internal exchange and distribution of goods. Secondly, due to its lack of resources which other settlements already have claims to in higher quantities, Mariam is home to many of the kingdom's poorest citizens. These people either work for the kingdom in the logistical and manual labour aspects of trade and distribution or are otherwise jobless and left to collect silk from the dangerous Greatweb Forest nearby.
Demographics
Mostly humans, some dwarves, few elves and half-elves, with scarce other races.
Government
Laws and taxation are made and enforced by the capital, but the management of the village including distribution of resources and trade is handled by the ruling noble of Mariam.
Defences
Walls surround the village and various watchtowers are additionally placed in the clearing around the outside.
Industry & Trade
The village's main income is the salary given to it by the capital city for its services.
Assets
A village treasury in the Reeve's manor. Enough weapons and armour for the entire village guard within the guard post/jail. Stockpiles of goods both for the village and awaiting distribution.
Guilds and Factions
The merchant's guild holds the most power aside from the government in the village. A faction of mercenaries exists here that unofficially watches over the silk harvesting from the nearby Greatweb Forest, offering protection for those looking to make good money in the deadly job of silk harvesting.
History
The daughter of the first king of Halcyon founded this village with her followers. As time went on, they found that the scarcity of necessary resources left them with the inevitability of destruction. To combat this, Mariam bargained with her father to divide some of the kingdom's resources amongst all of the settlements to ensure their survival. Mariam then, studious as she was, agreed that her village would handle the logistics of distributing much of the resources in Halcyon.
Tourism
The village has very little to no tourism, as it is only used as very low-income housing and a distribution hub.
Architecture
Almost all of the homes are shoddily built shacks of wood. Government buildings and shops are also made of wood but otherwise display clean, sturdy construction.
Geography
Mariam is built in a large wooded area north of Greatweb Forest.
