The Communities

Where Hands Build the City

The Communities district hums with the energy of labour and survival. A dense sprawl of stone cottages, timber workshops, and crowded tenements, it’s home to the working class—those who build, mend, and carry the weight of the City League on their backs. The streets are narrow and bustling, alive with the sound of hammers, street vendors, and children at play between errands. There’s little space here, with homes crammed together, but life pushes forward with pride and resilience.
This district is defined by trade and toil. Smithies, bakeries, laundries, and tanners line the alleys, their doors always open, their owners always at work. Every corner offers some essential service, from cobblers mending boots to seamstresses patching worn cloaks. The air is thick with the smell of smoke, fresh bread, and sweat, and though few here grow rich, most take pride in an honest day’s work. The Labourers’ Guild Hall, known as the Lantern Hall, stands as a gathering place, where jobs are posted at dawn and wages argued with quiet determination.   Evenings in the Communities bring a different kind of life. Taverns and eating-houses fill with tired workers, sharing news, laughter, and troubles over mugs of ale and steaming bowls of stew. Neighbours know each other well, and favours—or grudges—are passed from door to door. Strangers are welcomed if they respect the ways of the district, but troublemakers quickly find themselves out of place. Pride runs deep here, in family, craft, and the small victories of a hard life.   Though overshadowed by the wealth of the Capitol and the order of the Punctilio, the Communities stand as the true foundation of the city. It is a place of honest living, where every stone laid and every loaf baked shapes the City League itself. Those seeking work, local wisdom, or simply the heartbeat of the common folk will find it here, among the clang of forges and the murmur of the marketplace.
