The Borough

Where Craft and Custom Thrive

The Borough is a district of steady rhythms and purposeful lives, nestled between the grandeur of the Arena to the south and the cold authority of the Punctilio to the east. It’s neither noble nor impoverished, but a place where craftspeople, shopkeepers, and performers live and work side by side. The streets here are clean, though not pristine, with narrow cobblestone lanes that twist between rows of tiled-roof houses, small workshops, and modest taverns. There's a quiet pride in the Borough—its people are independent, self-reliant, and just close enough to the city’s power to feel its pull, but distant enough to avoid being consumed by it.
Life in the Borough hums with a sort of diligent energy. By day, you’ll hear the clang of hammers, the buzz of conversation spilling from shopfronts, and the occasional street performer plucking out a tune for coin. The district is known for its small guildhalls, tailors, scribes, and traders of honest wares. Those who dwell here aren’t rich, but many aspire to more—and some remember better days when their crafts or performances earned them fleeting fame in the Arena or favour in the Capitol.   As evening falls, the Borough’s charm becomes more evident. Lanterns flicker to life, casting warm glows over low archways and stone steps, while local taverns fill with voices and song. There’s a sense of community here—everyone seems to know each other’s names, or at least the rumours behind them. Yet behind the friendliness, there’s also competition. Small rivalries simmer between merchants, performers, and guilds, each vying for the attention of patrons, and perhaps, one day, the chance to rise into the upper echelons of the city.   For travellers, the Borough offers comfort, craft, and a chance to see the heartbeat of the City League. But to truly understand it, you’ll need to walk its streets, talk to its people, and discover for yourselves what lies behind the painted shutters and worn wooden signs.   At the northern edge of the Borough, near the city walls, the atmosphere shifts subtly. The streets here grow straighter, more orderly, and the presence of uniformed guards becomes a regular sight. The City Watch barracks loom with solid stone walls, their banners fluttering in the breeze, and the clatter of drills or the bark of commands can often be heard. Nearby, a small cluster of businesses caters specifically to the needs of the Watch—armour repairers, provision merchants, and quiet taverns where off-duty guards gather. Though not as rigid as the Punctilio, this part of the Borough holds a certain discipline, and the presence of the Watch keeps most trouble at bay—at least, trouble that can’t slip past a watchful eye.
