Ava Kepheus
Necromancer Ava Kepheus
Ava is a complicated person.
Ava was born in the wilds of Stratos, north of Maccion. Her family were once city elves that were able to barter/pay their way to freedom. The struck out into the wilderness, and things were good for a while until her family was killed off. While she was very young, she was told that her family was killed by humans who burned down their house but missed her. She was then found by a hag named Gothal who appeared as a wise, kindly woman.
It was never fully proven out if the hag had a hand in the destruction of her family, but Gothal took care of Ava and groomed her into distrusting humans and becoming an accomplished necromancer. It's there in the woods Ava spent her formidable years, learning many skills and talents along the fey abomination.
She struck out to Maccion, under the guise of a pupil of Pelor's teaching, to find out more about a magical pan flute. This is the same flute that her father had, and she wanted a piece of that childhood back. While working under Ceo, she bided her time and tried to find out more information about this flute and how to obtain it. She was able to determine that it was the members of the Aquila family who ultimately killed hers and took the flute.
Outwardly, Ava is a bubbly young elf woman who at a moment's notice use her magical talents to destroy her enemies, then raise them back to attack their previous allies. There are some points where she seems to enjoy this, but ultimately she is a good person and driven to live a quiet life with a family. She keeps much of her magic under wraps to stay off the radar of the College of Magic with her help from her husband Demoarchos Kepheus. With him, they have one child and another on the way.
She still resides in Maccion, predominantly fulfilling her duty as a Demoarchos wife, but she still finds time to go back into the woods and practice her magic with her child.
Relationship with Pan Flute 5
The relationship with the Pan Flute 5 started before they realized that Ava was a dark necromancer in the woods (originally encountered here). After being tasked by Ceolmund to go look for Ava, they met her under her alter ego, as an acolyte of Pelor. Over the course of the weeks with her, the truth of her double life and intentions around the pan flute came to light. Once the group retrieved the pan flute, Ava even attacked the Pan Flute 5 in order to get it back for herself. After defeating her, she relents and begs to get the flute back, explaining her background to them. She explains that her mother Gothal could potentially help with the Jester issue, being their common enemy in exchange for the flute. The group agrees, and they go to Gothal. After using the flute to capture Jester in a jar, Gothal's true intentions were made clear. She was going to use the pan flute in combination with the Jester to sow chaos across Absalon. Teaming up with Ava, the group destroyed the hag taking the Jester with them, but giving the flute to Ava. In preparation of the Battle of Maccion, the Pan Flute 5 convinced Ava to help. Because they returned the flute to her, she agreed. Ava was instrumental in building a palisade with her undead minions. She was also able to hold off an arm of the invading force at Maccion while the Pan Flute 5 engaged the main force. While their relationship hasn't always been perfect, through the story of the Pan Flute, Ava considers the Pan Flute 5 as friends and will help them at any time.Battle of Maccion
As mentioned above, Ava was a big part of the defense of Maccion. Using her tireless undead army, they were able to construct physical barricades to help repel the hobgoblin army. While the Pan Flute 5 took on the main arm of the force, she was able to stave off a rear attack, keeping them from being encircled. Thusly also allowing for Demoarchos Kepheus to come in with reinforcements. It is important to point out that during this battle, she maintained her alternate identity of the Dark Necromancer. Because of that, her marriage and public persona of being a wife of a demoarchos doesn't cause too much suspicion.Ithaca Consideration
Ava's husband, Neophytos, was called back to Ithaca. Typically this is for a promotion or other accolades, but he has been gone much longer than usual. Ava also gave birth to her second child, Nissim.Relationships
