The Sun's Harvest

"No. Never again. We cannot let magic like this run wild. Keep it tome-bound. Away from any other scroll, or madman. Do you understand me? Get rid of it, now!"
- Archmage Kayla IV
Through a bargain with the corrupted form of the God of the Suns, Sol , the most horrific event had occurred. Deep within the Shifting Sands of Erialla, a maddened Sage, one of the Apostles of the Fell Flame , who had left to pursue greater connections with the Sun. Under the guise of Iksel, he ventured to Erialla, to conduct research on the FlameStone . This led to 'Iksel' conducting many raids and burglaries of travelling caravans which held the arcane rocks. He managed to turn a selection of the stones into a fine powder, and had kept it in a series of vials.
Iksel's scholarship of Sol and his abilities have led him to the discovery of Sol's innate ability to control beings that were destined by fate to become warriors. As a fragment of their souls, Iksel would be able to steal them through an ancient ritual that he was taught, to take the mind of a person. With the powdered Flamestone, he'd be able to amplify the ritual as a placeholder instead of salt. The only thing he had left to do was to find a suitable target to test the laws of the material plane and it's boundaries. A letter, dedicated to the chief of the local military, made of orcs, explaining how if the army did not show up within the far reaches of the desert, that the local city would become rubble.
Iksel's plan was hatched. Standing atop one of the largest dunes of the local area, he had began making the ritual using the Flamestone powder. Once the fleet of soldiers had arrived, to kill him, he began his ritual. Linking the runes to his body, with the powder, he managed to amplify the mind control. Alas, it had gone worse than expected. Iksel's worship to Sol made him able to rip the warrior fragment of every soldier's soul, which had killed them all. It did not bode well for himself, either. The fragments would be absorbed by him, transforming his soul into a horrific, hollow shell of what was once natural. The only thing left would be the journal that Iksel wrote his forms of worship, and conclusions.
"The souls of the warriors, those born to be. Like those Orcs of the north, they hold the fragment of a warrior in their souls. Of course, yes. They're perfect examples. Plus, they're expendable. Who'd care with them disappearing?"
- Quote from the journal of 'Iksel', days before the Harvest
Once the event had occurred, Archmage Kayla IV had been dispatched to figure out what had happened. A spike of raw magic was found there, one Kayla could sense from far away. Upon finding the journal, she would be able to identify what had happened. Her demands were made, to have the journal locked away, as well as the powdering of Flamestone be punishable by exile, or worse.

Iksel missed some important steps in there somewhere! Perhaps was too excited as the plan came together to make a small test first. Glad the archmage sent to investigate had the sense to quarantine the knowledge.
