Heroes is the campaign manager and social media network for your characters in World Anvil. This guide is a quick explanation of the layout of Heroes to get you started! For more information on a specific Heroes feature, take a look at its specific guide.
Let's look at each element individually:
- Sidebar menu (highlighted in red): this contains links to the different parts of Heroes: your Dashboard, your Characters, your Campaigns and your RPG Sheets. Clicking on the Heroes logo will always take you to the Dashboard, and you can click on the "World Anvil" link to go back to your World Anvil Dashboard. If you have currently selected a campaign or character (see below) it will appear below the logo. In the example screenshot, the campaign "Tests and Dragons" is selected. You can toggle the sidebar with the hamburger menu (highlighted in green).
- Profile picture and notifications (highlighted in cyan): clicking on your profile picture, on the top right corner of the screen, will toggle a drop-down menu to different parts of your account configuration. The mail icon will open a drop-down with your latest notifications and a link to the Message Center, which allows you to send private messages to other characters (you can start a new conversation with the Message button in the character's profile page).
- Followed characters stream (highlighted in yellow): when you follow a character (see the Guide to character interaction), all of their posts will automatically appear in this stream.
- New Heroes (highlighted in purple): this is a list of the latest characters that have been created in Heroes. Clicking on their names will take you to their profile.
At the footer of Heroes there are two links to report bugs and request features. Feel free to use them if you want to see improvements to the system! Below these links, you can find the regular World Anvil footer with links to various pages.
A quick look to...
When clicking on Characters
in the sidebar menu, two options will appear: My Characters
and Followed Characters
. The first option lets you see all the characters you have created in Heroes, as well as create a new one. When you click on a character in this list, it will be selected as your active character and will appear on top of the sidebar menu (you can click on it to quickly switch between character or access different parts of their profile).
The second one lists all characters that you're currently following. From there you can access their profiles or quickly unfollow them.
link will take you to the list of campaigns you are currently gamemastering. If you click on a campaign it will be selected as your active campaign, which means that any settings that you change will affect that campaign. You can see the currently active campaign on top of the sidebar (click on it to quickly switch between campaigns or access different parts of its settings).
At the bottom of the page there is a button that lets you create new campaigns. The process of creating a campaign is explained in the Guide to campaign creation
This part of Heroes lets you create new statblocks for different RPG systems, as well as generic blocks for embedding web pages and making random tables. More on that in the Guide to Sheets
Clicking on the Worlds option will take you to a list of all your worlds. Clicking on them allows you to invite characters into that world by sending them a link. In order to put a character into a world, just access that invite link with your active character. Once that is done, the world will appear in the character's profile.
What is Heroes? Heroes is a World Anvil projects that lets you both manage an RPG campaign and your characters, using the platform as if it were a social network. You can post as your character, give Renown or comment to other characters' posts and even follow them. Write campaign journals, share your excitement when leveling up and post fan art in your characters profile!
Is it free? Yes! There are some features limited to Guild members. However, most of the functionality is free for all.
Where do I start? Using Heroes is pretty straight-forward. However, all features need documentation, so if you need some guidance, this is the place to start! If you need further help, you can always connect to our Discord server and ask your questions there.
Aaaaah! MY EYES!! Worry not, for we have a dark theme! It's called the "Villain theme" and you can enable it from your interface settings (click your profile picture on the top right -> "Interface Settings").
