Urgus Clans

"Urgus Clans" is the common term for the beastfolk territories peppered across eastern Amrynn and its islands.

Structure

While the term "clans" seems to imply a collection of family-based groups, the Urgus Clans are instead a peppering of disjunct territories that have banded together under their commonalities. What beastfolk call Clans are territories defined by a major landmark, like a large lake or tall mountain. Every Clan holds several towns, and vary in development depending on their population. Some Clans have no more than three villages, while others have multiple cities. The term "Clan" was inspired by the strong importance of family in the cultures of many beastfolk races; they are family with those in their villages, towns, cities, and territories. Regardless of their population, every clan is given equal representation when it comes to government. Representatives from every clan discuss matters at yearly gatherings, most often held in one of the larger Ursan cities.

Demography and Population

The majority of individuals living in the Urgus Clans are beastfolk

Territories

Thiben, the area around a temperate delta on the eastern coast of Amrynn, is the largest of the Urgus Clans. It holds the most developed cities and the heart of the Kodan: the Grand Complex. Altogether, there are 31 other Urgus Clans of varying size, including major territories such as: Autumn-Brook: a riverine territory near Thiben. Canopy-Heart: a tropical forest territory where towns are carved and built around massive trees. Great-Mangrove: a coastal territory with port settlements that run ships to the islands on the south-eastern coast. South-Scrub: A southern territory near the border of the Phenada Empire. Pelt-Mount: A northern territory near the border of the Republic of Idris.

Foreign Relations

In beastfolk culture, non-beastfolk races are veiwed with a general sense of unease. Beastfolk religion centers around a main myth of creation, and dictates that other races were not created by the same beast deities. Other races also tend to view beastfolk with unease, due to their animal traits. Beastfolk can be easily stereotyped as unrefined and uncultured, especially those from less-populated Clans. However, the Urgus Clans do trade with the Phenada Empire and Republic of Idris.

Mythology & Lore

Beastfolk religion is based on the study of the night sky, and the shapes drawn on maps of stars.

Cosmological Views

Most beastfolk believe that in the beginning of Èdstrith as a plane, Ursa Major descended from the stars to create the beastfolk races from stardust and stone. The first race created were the Ursan, imbued with the insatiable hunger for knowledge of all kinds. Next, she created the Peromy, imbued with the desire to make language and record newfound knowledge. Then came the Roptera and Ustel to protect and shelter their beast-kin. Finally, the Briarbuck, Boggard, and Pholi races were made with a longing to create and craft like Ursa Major herself.
