Raised in a human commoner village, Noelani never believed that she was born for greatness.
 
Each day was the same - tend to the pigs and other livestock, and help her mother and sibling gather crops and flora to maintain their home and basic means of survival. This was a humble beginning, but it was never enough.
 
At the age of 12, Noelani was deemed old enough to enter the forest alone - after all, her mother needed to stay home with her younger siblings, and she could use a hand. Noelani was sent out each day, only under the rule that she would not go beyond the meadow. Despite her mother's request, she only had one thing in mind, and that was to enjoy her time by herself. The village was just too loud, and the forest brought her a sense of peace. Each day, she rummaged the roots and forest floor for mushrooms, herbs, and small animals for her family. The forest became her sanctuary.
 
One day, as she was bordering the meadow, something caught her eye. This was not an animal, but it certainly had animal-like properties, and she was looking straight into its eyes - a hagraven.
 
These creatures had only been known to her as monsters, or more so, witches. Before she could process what she saw, the hagraven had already engaged her, but not in the way she expected. This woman-esque creature was kind - kinder than any stranger she had met in her village. The longer she looked into her eyes, the worn, reptilian features seemed normal and more human. Soon, she had befriended the creature. Her worry turned to friendship, and soon she was visiting the hagraven each day just beyond the meadow. For once, she had found companionship.
 
She never knew her name, but she knew where she lived. Each day the raven would teach her something new about her magical powers. Mostly, they were medicinal or mundane things she could do around her wethered cottage, but Noelani yearned to learn more. As the years went by, she only grew closer to the hagraven and begged for her to teach her more. This was their little secret.
 
At age 17, Noelani had become something of a witch herself. She found great power in being an acolyte to her kindred cryptid friend. She had great natural talent, and the raven saw this. She was ready.
 
She came in the dead of night, just as the raven asked. This time, she was all the way past the meadow, into the swamp. Each time she went deeper into these woods, her mother's words drifted deeper into memory. The village had nothing for her now - it was time for her to find her own greatness.
 
She heard their words. She pledged her oath. And she knew the cost of such power. Her once beautiful youth was sacrificed that same night - but she felt the effects immediately on the decision she had made. She grew what she only knew was ugly. Hairless, thin, and feathered. Her feet painfully transformed into that of ancient lore, as her reptilian carapace came to true form. Blood spilled from her transformations - but her power felt great. She was so much more.
 
The ceremony was swift. There were so many others there just like her, as they watched and chanted her name. The transformation was complete.
 
Odin would be proud. After all, she had much work to do as his new warlock, servant, and messenger.
