What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
I've asked support before why it wasn't possible to change article types, and their explanation was that switching from one to another would have too much specific formatting issues to preserve data (language to settlement, for example).
However, this shouldn't be an issue when switching from a generic article to a specific template. Given that, it seems like it shouldn't that much of a hassle to be able to "add on" the features from the specific article onto a generic article. (e.g Becoming a language article would only mean adding the dictionary and other sections available in the editor's content tab).
Potentially could add a warning when switching so the user knows that this change is irreversable, maybe also have a popup UI for the user to see what features would be added to the article.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
Implementing the above would provide a way for users to adjust articles, which can easily accrue when the template list is so large, it's easy to forget or look over a template.
What are other uses for this feature request?
This is a very focused request but it circumvents the potential of losing data from having to manually create a new article, delete the old one, and copy over the vignette, and any other details from an article, which has multiple points where a user could make errors by forgetting values, where this process could only fail if the user chooses the wrong category.
