Current Situation


Badges! We all love and want them during events. Shiny and a great way to show off how much work you've put into your world. But... do we only work on our world during challenges? And do we only take part in the community during these times? No of course not! So why only bestow rewards during timed challenges?

Proposal


General 'Milestone' Achievements! You can think about wordcount, article count, likes, followers, all the general stats. I'm not sure on what WA tracks, but achievements for likes and comments on other people's articles could be awesome as well. I'm not saying we should do participation trophies for just being on WA, but having these milestone goals can be great for people who do not participate heavily in challenges but are invested in the long term goal of building out their world(s). With more stats being tracked (like maps created, images uploaded, statblocks made, random tables designed) it could even serve as a great way of profiling your type of worldbuilding. You got a badge for 50 maps? Damn you must have some great cartography skills!

Potential drawbacks

lot is great in the spirit of competition, but we've seen some people creating empty articles for events as well, it would be hard to track these things outside of a competition setting. The question is, would we be bothered by people 'faking' their achievements? Another problem is what I would call 'badge-greed', we've seen people obsess over badges, and these would reinforce that behavior. In any case I would personally object against a leaderboard of these achievements to prevent that type of competitive behavior. Although I'd love more stat tracking in general, I am aware that it weighs heavily on the shoulders of the servers, so that could be a roadblock for this feature as well.

Additional proposals for Badges


With or without these new badges, I'd love to be able to 'copy image block' my badges into an article. That way I can proudly display and show on my homepage, about, event pledge or anywhere which badges I earned. I'm sure i could just save the image itself and upload it, but having that image link to the event page or the blog with all the winners of that particular event might be cool. Another thing I'd love to be able to do is customize which badges are displayed and how on my profile page but that's just an afterthought!  

Closing Argument/TL;DR


I think milestone achievements and badges could help motivate and reward people to worldbuild outside of challenges and also make it possible to show off how much work they've put in and characterize the type of work they put into their world.

      This sounds great! I've put a lot of work and time in my world / campaign, but I rarely get the time to finish any of the challenges. So having achievements / badges for the regular work you put in sounds great and could motivate people to push themselves further, without having the constraint of needing to finish it in a certain time period.

      If used carefully, this could be a great drive for everyone to keep engaged and creative. Even without challenges as such. It is especially interesting to shine the light on things that are not writing, like the maps mentioned or maybe art?   I for one know an artist who is using WA and he will have tones of awesome art and not much writing. Yet again there is no way to mark art as "original art" right? - but that's another problem.   Maybe we could even have badges for reengagement? For example the last article created was 300 days ago - create 10 new articles and get the "welcome back" badge tier 1.

      Badge support would be excellent. I would propose expanding this a bit further by including the ability for world builders to create their own badges system for their subscribers that appear in the discussions. I realize this proposal is for badges to promote participation in world building, but it might make sense to make a complete badges system that supports both. The badges for subscribers would be a way to motivate subscribers to participate in discussions just as badges would be used to promote world builders to participate in world building.

      This is a good idea, but I'd like to see them on a different page then the competition badges (as we know them now), otherwise this page will be a huge list unable to fathom.

      Copy image block would be cool! I'd post them under the article in question.
      Making the badges as they are now clickable to jump to the relevant challenge page would be awesome too.

      I agree that achievements could be more than just for WA recognition of events. I don't enter these challenges because I am too busy worldbuilding (though I might in the future). However, some WA recognition to show I am dedicated could increase my visibility and attract more fans. Great Idea!

      I am Eve and I approve this message! Dun forget milestone badges should be for everyone, whether their world is public or private. Badges aren't for *winning*, they're for achieving. Everyone should be included! It would be fun if other things could be included without too much effort, but I'd settle for earning badges just for word counts. They're already tracked. 50K? Have a badge! 100K? Have a badge! 1M words? Have a badge (and throw yourself a ding-dang party because that's somethin'!).

      And WA could commision artists to create the badges. It wouldn't have to be the same artist every single time, and it would be a great way to show off the artists in the community!
