Custom Portraits for Family Trees

family-tree images

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Family trees currently use the character portrait from articles. This is problematic for me, since I use rectangular portraits where the characters have been drawn to scale. These look fine on character pages, but don't work very well in family trees, which practically require a square or round image. (Due to how the images are cropped, smaller characters like kobolds or halflings are completely removed from the family tree frame.)   To fix this, I propose adding an option in the Relationships tab to specify an alternative image to be displayed in the family tree.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Family trees would still refer to the character portrait by default (and thus avoid breaking existing family trees), but use the custom image instead when one is provided. This allows for using square images properly cropped to look good in the family tree while giving people the freedom to use whatever format they want for the character portrait.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This feature would also work well for adding custom placeholder images, especially for characters that have no portrait to begin with and where the author doesn't want a placeholder to show up in their article.

While I rarely use Family Trees, I do see the usefulness in this. Being to able to NOT have to rely on "square" or "circular" character images wouldn't lock people into such a narrow space, and they wouldn't have to crop down their lovely images just to get the face in the correct angle for the character to be properly seen on the family tree.

This would be so useful. I had a thought that it would be good if the family tree portraits could be sepia or black-and-white tone if they person was deceased without having to make their character portrait faded, and this would fix that idea while also making it possible for so many other variations.

I like this idea. Another advantage I see to this is that images don't need to be very big for use on a family tree. Being able to load appropriately sized images just for the family tree would likely improve the performance. Some of my larger family trees load quite slowly now... likely due in part to the size of images.

I love this suggestion. I've been considering switching out all of my character portraits just to make the family tree look nice and uniform. This would be a great alternative to that.
